without worrying about the money and all that stuff, would just making the switch to vista work?

Vista is overpriced and can run clunky on lower than mid-range hardware. I wouldn't buy it if you don't really need it.

Just for Shiggles and Ghits, try uninstalling Mcafee and then booting into normal mode.

You can search for update in the device manager. Start, control panel, system, hardware.... do you know which drivers specifically are old?

what happens if the drivers are old, should they be deleted.

im writing this from my phone. i tried going into 'last known good configuration' and now i can't do much. i can log on under normal mode but i cant access the internet or the help and support service. it tells me to turn the service on but i cant find it. if i just re buy xp or something and re installed it, would that just fix everything?

Most likely. You would lose any data you had before though. It doesn't sound like a hardware issue.

I will probably just take my computer to a computer doctor to have it completely cleaned and then download AVG.

Steve, the safe bet is to take it to a computer doctor and pay the money or just go out and buy a whole new computer.

I'm too lazy to go back and read if you posted your computer specs.. What is your connection to the Internet? Because generally your network card should have been seen.. But if you can't do anything, use someone elses computer, DL all the drivers for all your components, or atleast your network connection, and go home and install the stuff.

Or DL and ISO of Ubuntu and be free of Windows forever.

Basically yes, but what drivers do you need? Mobo? video? You may have outdated drivers, but I don't think that is what the main problem is. Has to be spyware, boot sector virus or something else malicious.

Oh ok. Score one for reformatting! If you have no internet, I'm guessing you are using the onboard NIC card. This driver is usually bundled with the motherboard driver, which you may have a disk for. Run the disk if you have it.

And you still have faith in Windoze?

You must have a lot more patience than I do. I would've switched to Ubuntu a long time ago.
