When ND goes into their 3 TE sets they don't use all true TEs. They usually use 2 TEs and an hback--in motion plays. When they are in their full 3 TE sets in short yardage situations, they use a 3RD tackle.
If Ragone remained healthy, he and Rudolph would've likely split long down situations, with Yeatmen in on 1st/2nd downs.
With Ragone out, Rudolph gets more of those 3rd down/long situation reps, and is still strong enough to block in 3 TE/goal line sets.
This injury doesn't force Weis/Haywood into doing anything differently, offensively. We lose a very athletic TE with a year of experience, but replace him with another one, who will go into 2009 with more experience had he not received this opportunity.
Given the unlikelihood of ND competing for a NC this season, it really isn't going to hurt the team as much as it would at another position.
