Its obvious Clausen is a strong #1 but who do you guys think will be the #2 quarterback this season for the Irish?

ES is way ahead of Crist right now. He could definitely step in if needed and ND wouldn't miss too much of a beat. Can't say that for Crist, seeing that he's just getting past information overload learning the ND system. It's a no-brainer.

Sharpley, without question.

Weis was quoted yesterday as saying Sharpley is better than Crist and is closer to being as good as Clausen, than Crist is to being as good as Sharpley.

Unless Clausen and Sharpley are hurt this year, Crist will NOT see the field. Montana will see the field before him. CW is no fool, he will not burn Crist's true Freshman year if he does not have to.

Makes sense, I personally think Dayne Crist is going to be a very very good QB at Notre Dame one day.

As much as I think Crist is going to be a great QB, I don't want him to play this year and waste a year that he could be leading us to a National Championship.

I think Crist will be a special QB. I think everything is set up for him to start for 2 seasons once Clausen graduates.

Bringing in a 3rd string Montana...... Sounds like magic to me.

I would say it depends on the situation. Charlie is going to try his absolute best to get Crist a redshirt this year (even thought we know that UND doesn't use the typical "redshirt" system). I would say if it's an injury related situation for a few plays or maybe a quarter of football I can see Charlie trying to use Montana instead of Crist. Not because Montana's playing ability but because of possibly being able to get Crist an extra year of eligibility.

I would agree. I see it being Clausen and then Sharpley and then if they are up by a lot Montana would see minutes over Crist in garbage time.

I read that Crist picked up the offensive playbook rather quickly. Although he has yet to see college game speed, he has recieved high praise from Charlie for looking impressive with only a couple weeks of practice under his belt.

Also, someone mentioned mop up duty for Montana. Weis was quoted as saying that is highly possible.

OK guys, let's put this discussion to rest. Dayne Crist is NOT going to see the field in 2008. The only way possible that he will see the field is if both Clausen and Sharpley are carted off the field and then CW will probably go to Montana or even put Goodman in for a couple snaps. There is no way Weis will allow a year of eligibility to be used for slop duty. Quit your damn pondering on this!!!

Sorry Golden, but some guys are so enamored with the new guy. Yes Crist will be a great QB, but there is a long term plan for him. That does not include 2008

Actually I agree with you. I hope he does not see the field in 2008 so he can preserve eligibility.

Jonesman basically hit it out of the park on this subject. Crist was brought in to give Jimmy another great player to compete against until he leaves. This in turn would make Crist better and give him a chance to pick up where Jimmy leaves off when he is done in South Bend. Crist is going to be a great QB, but lets give him some time to develop.

Sorry for the repeat info above, about mop-up duty. I should have read the 2nd page before posting.

We need to start thinking about the NEXT great QB. The one who is waiting for Crist to turn pro.

Hopefully that next great QB will be Montana's younger son, who plays down here in SoCal at Clausen's old school, which is a football machine. He just transferred in from Concord de la Salle up north (they run a run-first offense) and will be competing for the starting QB job. He is the Montana that Weis really wants...
