Ty wasn't worried about who he was recruiting for the O-Line. He was worried about which club to use to get his ball out of the rough.

That was an outstanding look at the OL situation the past 5+ years.

Its really hard to argue with that....

CW is the man recruiting wise.... about time to see ONE, just one, big win on the field this year... that's all I really ask for

USC or a bowl win... one of the two MUST happen

Great article. Definitely provides some insight into what we already knew. Ty was fired for poor recruiting which was the primary cause for last years poor season and any struggles we might see this year.

Nice article - hard to argue the facts when presented like that. Year 5 is always, or should be the year all coached are evaluated on.

That said, I also understand being able to project what may happen, like in tys case, before the last 2 years were played out. Can't play/compete at this level when both quality and quantity are putting your team as such a disadvantage.

I have just resently started to follow ND recruting. I knew the Willingham didn't do a good job getting OLinemen but wow I didn't relize it was that bad.

i am in the same boat as you rock. been a lifelong fan of notred dame but hadnt thought of how closley recruiting was followed until i got the bug earlier this year. now its an addiction. and to see how bad slick willie set us back is just a wake up call. but it also shows us how great cw and co have been doing on recruiting. not just the play maker postions but the guys who make football work.

Your so right. Let's stop the the Ty bashing ( until we really bash them) he's not the reason any more for our downfall. We need to win a big game this year. Looking to blame someone else for Charlie failure's are over. It's step up time

Willingham Effect

Willingham Effect

Fine article. TW is notorious for being a bad recruiter; CW is rapidly becoming the best recruiter in college ball.

Now the Irish have to win consistently.

Have to disagree on that one. The third year is the standard for the coaches' performance. This is an exceptional case where the 3rd year is not going to be a good measure for how good a coach Charlie is.

But definitely a well thought out article. Illuminating on the problems faced by the ND OL.

ant, in the 3rd year, the new head coach is only working w 2 of his recruited classes, and as shown in the article, his first recruiting class is not usually much of one, based on the fact that it is a conglomerate of both the outgoing staff (who can't close the deal because they are heading out the door) and the incoming staff (who will be starting out 10 months behind in recruiting for the year).

So a head coach in his 3rd year will be working w his own recruited freshmen and his cobbled together Sophomore class, and using his predecessors Srs, Jrs and RS Sophs. If lucky, this is not that crazy of a difference. In NDs case you see what happened with the dirth of recruiting w TW vs BD before him. TW was left w more players w higher ratings from BD than CW was left w from TW.

Although many talking heads like to gloss over this point and say that a coach in the 3rd year has 3 years w of his players, thats absolutely ignorant. Thats why after hearing it for the last year from MarkMay etal, I can't believe anything they say, because they are factually false.

That is a different arguement than a coach having his stamp put on a program for 3 years. That is why some coached are better than others- they can coach up a team sometimes until their players get to be Jrs in yr 4, where they should have a large impact. Also, some new staffs come in to a situation where the O or D are not greatly different or the recruiting has been going well.

Anyway, TIFWIW
