We visited Reuben today and I believe we offered, but I need to confirm. He's a stud that has over 50 offers.

I have no clue why, I just think we get this kid. I have no rhyme of reason to this thinking I just think we get him.

Wow, I hope you guys are actually right. I just feel he is LSU bound. If he takes a visit here and has legit interest, I always like out chances. He would be a huge suprise..I compare it to the situation of Deion Walker last year.

I like that we are going after the biggest and best players, regardless of whether they have us ohigh on their list. With the coaches we have, they have brought in several guys nobody thought we had a shot at. Goodluck, Coach Haywood.

Wow is right.....idk what u two are feeling or thinking, but i dont think we have a chance. When was the last time we pulled in a top recruit from Louisiana? I cant even remember any in the last few recruiting cycles that acted like they were considering us. We have offered some, but just dont think we ever had a real chance with any of them. I think we had a shot at some linebacker last year, but those position needs were filled early in the cycle, making us not recruit him very hard. i want to say his last name was like Roussel or something. anyways, maybe ur right, but highly doubtful in my opinion.

Your right IrishAddiction. LSU always locks the state up pretty tight. The only recent prospect I remember us having a shot at was Will Blackwell the DT in the 2007 class. But as usual he ended up going to LSU (even though their DL was loaded and he would have played immediately at ND).

Notre Dame was the runner-up to LSU for DT Will Blackwell in 2007. I don't think they even offered anyone from Louisiana last cycle.

Nd is pushing Louisiana hard this year. I think we may pull at least one out of there this year.

IA- my point wasn't that we had great shots at getting these guys (I don't know what our chances are)- my point was that we were going after them and not conceding them automatically like we had in the past. It might take some time to pull a guy out of there- maybe a couple of recruiting cycles to make an impact, but as both the success on the field improves and our attention to the players in unrecruited areas of the past improves and increases, we will start to get them.

Thes only way we get Randle if for him to visit ND....if he places academics high on his priority list, then we have a legit shot at him.

Grizz is absolutely right. What does it hurt to offer the kid? Even if he says "No", the Irish are in the same position if they didn't offer! There is no loss of prestige when an unlikely recruit goes elsewhere.:)

To briefly summarize what has happened in the recruiting process over the last few weeks.
We beat almost every team to the punch as far as making contact and conducting our evaluations. Since we don't have 100 offers out there right now we were able to focus on our guys and make a great impression on many of them.
Once we hit our main targets we focused on throwing our hat into the ring of some of the more highly tauted prospects that might not have interest, but are the Quality kids whose priorities are in the right place. Landing one of these kids would be considered a success.
Lastly we are going into the back yard of the SEC in order to get involved in the recruitment on some of these SPEEDY southern players.
This recruiting class is just as much about making connections for the future as it is about landing top talent. Three straight top ten classes affords us this ability.
To anwser the question do we have a chance to get Randle, sure we do. although he is an LSU lean if he chooses to play up north we will land him.

Not saying we shouldnt offer the top notch kids at all. I just believe that we should spend more time with those that we have a legit chance with, even those we havent offered. We have NOT pulled a recruit from the state of Louisiana for so long that i cant even remember, or even had a real legit shot with any of them. Will Blackwell was from Cass Tech in Michigan, but not from Louisiana. The only way we have a real legit shot with these Louisiana kids is if the kids actually care about academics, which is often instilled from their PARENTS. If not, sorry but just not very likely. He is staying in the south.

I understand what you're saying about time. But, a couple thoughts:

It is up to CW and Co whether their time is wasted by going after recruits that might be hard to pull out of a geographic area. If they don't meet their needs and get top talent, then it's their heads that will roll.

Also, let's say a certain recruit appears to be a Pac-10 lean. What if the only reason it appears that way is because all the other school assumed he would lean that way? What if the Pac-10 did not recruit a "lean" very hard because they assumed he was a Pac-10 lock? By recruiting kids who might be "leans", CW and Co force those schools to recruit just as hard. If they don't, there is a chance ND can pull that kid away from the lean because the Pac-10 teams did not pay as much attention as ND did. Problem is, you won't know unless you try.

Another possible reason to continue to recruit a specific guy is - an elite athlete may lean to Texas, but because Texas just closed on the #2 in the nation at his position (say QB), this other elite player now is lookuing at us . Happens all the time. I understand your point, IA. Its just we have to go for some of these guys to get any. Like KLM last year. Like Wood this year. Like Crist and Clausen. Maybe poor examples= sorry.

Will Blackwell is in fact from Louisiana. I believe the Cass Tech (Michigan) player you are thinking of is Joseph Barksdale who is another DT the we were in on back in 2007. Like Blackwell, however, Barksdale decided that LSU was the school for him.

No, Will Blackwell was from West Monroe, Louisiana. Joe Barksdale was the one from Cass Tech.

Yeah, wow, you guys are right. Feel kinda stupid about the blackwell thing. Oh well, i just remember how mad i was when barksdale committed to LSU, maybe thats why he was the only DT i remembered going there. Grizz and SoCal you both make good points....i like the idea of having competition over the top recruits. We should do as we did the last recruiting cycle, and tell the best of the best recruits that their spot is saved. Floyd, Sabino, and the monster miami DT all had that option given to them. I just think we should spend just as much time on GOOD plan B guys, while still leaving the possibility of having the top guys commit even if the spots may be filled in his position already by lesser talent, but talent is there just in case. I definately dont want to sound like i am slamming charlie and co, cause i back them 100%. Just MOI.

Barksdale's Commit

Wasn't it at the US Army All-American game that he committed to "the University of LSU?"

I know this isn't the appropriate thread but we got a little of track with this one and a couple of people were skeptical about us recruiting some of the sec athletes. Per ESPN Rodney Smith:s::s::s::s: 6'5'' WR from Florida now lists his top 2 as ND and tOSU. Seems like he needs an offer now to push us over the top. He is this years Baldwin...4.4 forty and a 40 in vertical leap.

ESPN 150 Watch List talent Rodney Smith told affiliate Web site InsideTheU.com that two programs currently stick out in his mind.
"I would say the two schools that interest me most right now are Ohio State and Notre Dame. Both of those schools would give me a good shot at getting to the next level. They have a lot of great players go through those schools."
Other teams such as Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, Mississippi, Minnesota, South Florida and Central Florida have extended offers to Smith.

Per ESPN, so take it for what its worth.

ESPN 150 Watch List talent Rueben Randle said after his trip to Coral Cables, Fla., "They are on top right now. I got down there to see how everything would work and how it was going on," affiliate Web site InsideTheU.com reports.
He continued, "Miami helped themselves. They showed me that they are very interested in me and they are not going to beat around the bush with me."
