Moloney drawn to Notre Dame

Tragedy brought Neil Moloney here. But his move to the United States from Ireland shortly after his mother's death at age six helped introduce the junior prospect to a sport that may shape his life in an unforeseen way.

"There were some tragic events — my mother died — that brought me here," Moloney said. "My mother now introduced me to football. I played rugby when I was younger so I couldn't wait to play."

Moloney, now a 6-foot-3, 244-pound two-way lineman from Mohnton, Pa., started his career as a skinny safety but later grew out of that position. Last season he started both ways as a sophomore.

"I actually played tackle this year because we had two all-district guards," he said. "So, I filled in at tackle. I was going to be all-city but I blew out my shoulder in the eighth game making a tackle on defense."

Moloney's experience in rugby has helped him to develop the nasty streak he plays with on the football field.

"I haven't had much experience but I know I've developed every year," he said. "I play balls to the wall for 48 minutes and play hard-nosed football. I try to beat on everyone."

That style of play has helped Moloney draw early interest from several top schools including Rutgers, Penn State, Florida, Florida State and Texas. He's made unofficial visits to Rutgers and plans to attend several summer camps including one at Notre Dame.

"Being a kid from Ireland, I've always liked Notre Dame," he said. "I have always wanted to play for ND."

Moloney wants to develop further as a lineman, even though there is no glory associated with the position. He knows without the big guys up front, there wouldn't be any glory in the end zone.

"If there weren't any offensive lineman opening up holes, the running backs wouldn't be getting the big runs," he said. "As an offensive lineman, you have to take pride in that."

Moloney spent the past 17 weeks rehabbing his injured shoulder and is now looking forward to getting back on the field. If one of those fields is in South Bend this summer, the international lineman may find some of that development that he's looking for.

Will we recruit him as a OL or DL? size a little questionable for OL isn't it? But I guess he is young and still growing. What's your thoughts?
