Auburn banking on change to spread offense

Tommy Tuberville was faithful for 13 years.

From 1995-2007, Tuberville and a run-oriented, pro-set offense were part of a perfect marriage that spawned more than 100 victories at Ole Miss and Auburn.

But like Brad ditching Jennifer for Angelina, Tuberville has jilted the system that served him so well for so long and took up with something newer and sexier. Tuberville has switched to the spread offense.

He replaced offensive coordinator Al Borges with Tony Franklin, a spread offense disciple who had success in the same capacity at Troy. Tuberville says he’s just giving his system a makeover – albeit an extreme one – rather than changing philosophy.

“Our philosophy will still be to run and play good defense and play well in the kicking game,” Tuberville said. “My concern was I don’t think you can come into (the Southeastern Conference) and throw 67 times a game and be consistent winners.

This should be interesting. Making this change is high risk, potentially high reward. Your opponents may not know how to defend you well, but you need the right personnel and the players need to change their mindset.

I hate that offense. Reminds me of the run and shoot. (I know it's different)

I prefer a strong running game in a single back or I formation with an innovative passing attack. I like run first offenses...

One thing to remember is that Auburn brought in a new offensive coordinator (who used to run the S-O) before last years' bowl to start implimenting it. Not saying that will change things, but it is different from ND's situation. CW spoke/met with Rodriguez for who knows how long and tried implementing it along with other offensive schemes, with no help from coordinators who knew what they were doing.

That being said, i do hope they have a steep learning curve.

Auburn more than an afterthought

I've been waiting to ask a question for some time now, but after Wednesday's article about Auburn's offensive changes (Auburn banking on change, March 19), it seems like the perfect time to ask what you expect from the Tigers in 2008. I respectfully disagree with your assumption that LSU will come into Auburn and win for the first time since 1998 for many different reasons. Are you still confident in picking LSU to win the West?

That said, Auburn is an intriguing team. The feeling here is Kodi Burns will flourish in coordinator Tony Franklin's spread attack. The Tigers always play well defensively, and with eight starters back on that side of the ball, they will do so again.

Perhaps Tuberville needs a lesson on the BCS. I am quite sure if he finished in the top8 or top5 then he would probably get an automatic bid as well. Or you could just win the SEC, but thats not an automatic bid though...
