In the arcticle about KLM committing from The Sun Times, the writer mentioned the following note about team signing day rankings:

"The SEC has an edge on signing day because its schools can oversign while the Big 10 can't." (What would ND's status on this be and why can SEC schools oversign and how does that work out in the end?)

I also noticed that some teams on Scout are listed with well over 100 eligible scholarship players on their rosters.. ie Ohio State has like 114. I thought the limit was 85?

I'm not completely new to reading about recruiting.... maybe new to posting... but I do admit I'm completely ignorant when it comes to the inner workings and details of the above questions.

Help!!!!

P.S. I just purchased my first Lottery Ticket in the vbPlaza... wish me luck!

Those players who are paid cash payments for their services don't fall under traditional schollies in the NCAA's eyes... that's why USC, tOSU and SEC schools have more schollies available than others

if you look back a few weeks, (http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/fighting-irish-recruiting/30676-scholarships.html) i started a thread about the apparently inflated recruiting class rankings the SEC is able to put up each year.

that happens because every year the SEC teams accept more LOI than they have space for, knowing that at least 1 or more of them won't get admitted into the school. then, by the end of that year, 2-3 more of those recruits will leave the school for academic or other off-the field issues.

so every year, the SEC teams have at least 25 to offer. they pick and chose who they want, and discard the rest.

and unfortunately, the recruiting sites like Rival and Scout and even guys like Lemming don't have the intellectual honesty to go back and adjust the class rankings based on who gets admitted.

They do to a degree. Auburn took almost 30 last year and then when only 22 or so got in they did drop to 8th which bumped ND up to 7th.

then maybe they do it selectively. because i recall seeing a story on So Carolina last year noting 2-3 players did not get admitted but when i looked at Rivals they still had them on the list.

We don't have any scholarships in Canada. Athletics really doesn't matter at the University level...kids don't go to University to play hockey... anyone really decent in any sport other than hockey ends up in the states on a scholarship somewhere. For hockey.... sometimes guys do end up in the NCAA to play (that option is gaining more and more popularity because they can get an education at the same time... so the kids who really want that usually go the NCAA route). If they stay home the only option is the CHA (Canadian Hockey Association - OHL, WHL, QMJHL) where they aren't allowed to go to school. They don't even pretend that these kids are students. If a kid is really really good and he wants an education well then they'll make an exception and have special contract stipulations written into the contract that allows them to attend classes or have tutoring. Kids who don't cut it academically... well... they either make it to the show or end up pumping gas or working back on the parent's farm.... etc. It's a bit crazy if you ask me telling a kid they have to make it to the NHL or play pro somewhere or they're done for. But... that's how we roll here in the Great White North. Then again... we never really have those athletes who have no business being at a university end up graduating from one. So it has it's trade-offs.

I mean...we've all seen guys who have no business being in University get a scholarship.... it's friggin' mind boggling how they justify it. That just never happens in Canada for athletics.

But then again... we don't have national signing day or big time college programs...

However.... you wouldn't believe the calibur of hockey in your average run of the mill men's league!!

I do wish Hockey would once again surplant B Ball as the nation's "other sport" as it did in the early 90's

Figures don't lie, liars figure!!! Numbers can sometimes be skewed to make them come out to whatever you want them to be. The Irish will NOT have the number one class, because there will be some pompous jerk doing the 'behind the scenes' calculations!
