I totally agree with this. Corwin Brown will be gone in 2 or 3 years maybe even sooner. Then Tenuta will shortly follow (If not sooner). I dont see either of these guys sticking around for very long and that worries me for the future. We need a Defensive Coordinator that is going to be good and going to be with us for the long haul. None of this temporary stuff. I torn between excitement and worry. I'm not so sure what I really think about all this. I guess we will find out.

Haywood is a nice prospect as a head coach too. I think we have to replace all (3) within the next 3 years which is good...that means we would be winning and people want HC that can win. If I am a HS defensive player and Tenuta & Corwin Brown come to my house I am commiting instantly!!!!! I cannot wait to see what this does for our DL recruiting next year!!!

someone needs to wake Latina up. great guy but terrible coach. i pray to God there is improvement on that OLine this year. you see JC can make all the throws if he has the time.

I bet our offense will get a ton better, if Tenuta helps with the defense in practice, that will force the offense to adapt and get better. Just like in games, adapt and score.

I think this is the BIGGEST news. I remember playing GT and was always concerned about what Tenuta was going to throw at ND, now we get to instill that fear into our opponents!

This I'm not too sure about. He had several throws this past year on deep outside routes where he just put too much air under it and was significantly off-target wide. These came in the games leading up to his benching for being "beat up." I looked at his mechanics on those throws and thought at the time (and hopefully this was the case) that he was struggling with those because of his banged up hip.

That being said, he did look remarkably better after his little hiatus.

But only time will tell, which is why I said I wasn't "too sure" about it, as opposed to outright disagreeing that he can make all the throws. Hopefully [NAME REDACTED] is the QB guru that we are told he is, because if so then I have no doubt that JC has the ability to make all the throws (otherwise we wouldn't have him here.)

is [NAME REDACTED] still getting the [NAME REDACTED] treatment?

doesn't his recruiting success and recent coaching hire get him out of the doghouse?

as a former QB(high school on a bad team, not D-1 level), it's extremely difficult to settle in the pocket when you're constantly on the run or forced to elude the blitz on play after play after play. your focus turns from the receiver down the field to the pressure in your mug. i agree that JC needs to work on his deep balls, but the fact that he had no time to throw at all certainly played into things. also, keep in mind his elbow wasn't 100% and that not only weighs on your physical abilities but your psyche as well.

it'll be interesting to see how he fairs this coming summer and fall after hopefully adding some lb's and continuing to mature as a person. he certainly better be on his game b/c DC can play some ball and will surely press him when it's time. my hope is that JC is up to the task and can lead this team and DC can gain valuable knowledge on the sidelines instead of being thrown to the wolves as a freshman. it's tough for any freshman QB to light it up unless you're starting behind the USC offensive line and have 10 seconds to find a 5 star receiver somewhere down the field.

i'm bullish for the upcoming season but let's get through wednesday first. i'm losing my mind!

I just spoke to Jon Tenuta, and he said stop debating about Jimmy Clausen's arm and accuracy in his thread.

playing hurt, no matter who you are, forces you into a different mindset. you're not free and loose and you're constantly worried about the injury. i truly believe that hurt JC early. we saw his improvement late in the year and what i really liked was him stepping up in the pocket and running the ball.

sorry to turn this into a Clausen thread i'll shut up. good point notredomer23!

I would still like to see Weis evolve as a HEAD coach and bring in an offensive coordinator who actually coordinates the offense...I would be really excited if Charlie had brought in as strong an assistant on the offensive side to help him the way I am sure Tenuta will help Corwin..

This situation with Brown and Tenuta on defense is a perfect training for Corwin's future as a head coach. He gets a chance to learn from and work with a respected innovator on the defensive side of the ball in Tenuta and an acknowledged offensive talent in Weis. In addition, this gives Corwin a chance to bring elements of Tenuta's attack-dog style to the hybrid 3-4 personnel system. Couple melding of styles and gaining of experience with the influx of defensive talent starting with Neal and Smith and Williams last year (and Walls and Bruton from earlier) and throw in the freshmen class.....(best Homer Simpson drooling imitation here)....

If you ask me - and this is PURE SPECTULATION HERE -, Corwin Brown is being groomed for the future; and if Weis and company do not get the ship righted in a big way in 2008, that future could loom sooner than anyone would believe. Not saying that such a move is likely or even wise in any way, but Corwin Brown is on the coaching fast track and 10 years from now it may not seem that crazy afterall...

Either that or some genius in the athletic dept. looked at last years defensive stats, ignoring the propensity of the inept offense to hand them a short field to defend, and is looking to potentially replace Corwin Brown.

I sure friggin hope not. I would prefer he be brought in in the sense you mention.

I like the hire (short term,) but we either just extremely overpayed a DB coach to lure him here or there were some "assurances" made to him about his future at ND.

I don't think that Corwin is going to be replaced, Lewis held the exact same position last year and if it wasn't for him having 2 hips needed to be replaced who knows if any coaching changes would have been made this far at all.

I'm very impressed with Weis' decision to hire Tenuta. People can call him arrogant and cocky but going out and landing a coach that has pretty much shut down his offense two years in a row is a not something an arrogant person would do.

I'm looking forward to seeing the ND defense in the next couple years. One thing that concerns me is the Tenuta has worked with a 4-3 defense at Georgia Tech but we're running a 3-4. Personally, I think the 3-4 opens a lot more versatile blitz schemes, I can't wait to see what he cooks up.

All I know is the LB's that are at ND already, or have committed must be drooling already. I don't care if another USC QB wins a heisman, as long as when he plays the Irish he gets knocked the **** out.

I completely understand the circumstances of Lewis's retirement. The only reason I brought up the possibility of the situation I mentioned was because it's not exactly commonplace for a somewhat highly respected DC who was in consideration for HC jobs to take a step down the coaching ladder to be a DB coach. Either we're overpaying our new DB coach or there were some assurances made. Or (and this would be the ideal situation for us) he took the position for personal reasons.

The hire helps on both sides of the ball. Build up the D but also point out the weaknesses on the O that perhaps Charlie is missing.

I agree. I loved watching the GT D when they weren't playing ND. They always seem to fly around the field with a recless abandon. I think this was a very good pick up for the ND staff.
