This is as good as getting any Five star recruit. He is a very very good coach and this should be a signal to the rest of the college football ranks that we are for real.

ND=NC in 09

I am very surprised that he is taking an assistant job!!!! Thought he would end up a DC or a head coach...he has always had good defenses at GT no matter what talent he had in place....now we just need an OL coach and a NC is right around the corner!!!

He'll probably be getting paid like a DC, which shows me that the administration is very serious about the football program. He is also a very nice insurance policy for whenever Corwn Brown moves on to be a head coach.

Per BGI, Coach Lewis will remain at Notre Dame and will begin his role as manager of
athletics community relations on Feb. 18.

It would seem a little late in the recruiting process to have a GT player jump to follow Tenuta. I sure Tenuta has been out of the GT picture for some time now and I would really be surprised if any player was waiting this long on an unemployed coordinator.

Not likely, besides Tenuta has never been a coach that known for being a very active recruiter or having such a desire to do so. That's one of the main reasons people seem to point to when people try to bring his name up for a head coaching position.

Thanks it was just something I was wondering.

yep, I guess the only negative thing that I see is that he's not a good recruiter. Hopefully all the other coaches can take up his slack!

Wow, this is great news, and completely unexpected on my part. Now if we could only do something about that OL.

Tenuta was one of the highest paid assistants in the country at GT with a salary of $400,000. I would assume he would get somewhat of a pay cut. Blanton said he is now 12000% committed

Tenuta was my #1 candidate for the defensive coordinater Job last year. Him adding to Corwins D will do wonders ... What a great hire for Charlie Weis. This hire is jsut as importnt as any recruit that ND landed this year IMO

I agree Goshen! Corwin Brown will move onto a head coaching job in 2 years max...I also would like start grooming Haywood's replacement...do not see him sticking around much longer.

It looks like ND just released some official info on this and the implication is they didn't intend for this to get out this early, considering they released this info in response to "rumors"

Quotes from Charlie Weis:
"Initially, Bill Lewis and I were not going to meet until next week, but due to rumors swirling around we felt it was best to address this right now.

"Early in December, I learned that Bill Lewis needed to have both his hips replaced and that he would have a four month recovery. He said there was a chance he may need to leave the coaching staff and that I should prepare a list of replacement names should this come to fruition.

"I spent time with (defensive coordinator) Corwin Brown in January discussing possible replacements for Bill in case this situation arose. Corwin and I talked to a few candidates and agreed that Jon was the best person for the job. Corwin and Jon had numerous conversations on how they would work together and they both agreed this would be a great fit.

"Personally, I'm excited Bill will remain a member of the Notre Dame family and I'm ecstatic that we could offer Jon the position. Bill has been a great member of our staff and he is a tremendous asset to the Notre Dame community. Jon's track record speaks for itself. He is a coach with an immense amount of defensive knowledge and will undoubtedly help our program.

"I will discuss this further on Friday, Feb. 8."

Quotes from Jon Tenuta
"It's a great opportunity for me to coach at Notre Dame and to work with Coach Weis. I'm truly thrilled about this and my family is excited, too.

"Two things attracted me to this job, Coach Weis and Notre Dame. It's an opportunity to coach at one of the greatest traditional powerhouse programs in college football and to work with one of the brightest minds in the game.

"I love coaching defense and Corwin is a very bright young coach who has a bright future ahead of him. He's a great guy who I'm looking forward to working closely with daily. My main goal is to do whatever I can to help the defense become the best in the country and help return Notre Dame to where it belongs."

I believe all recruits will think this is positive...After having his name be thrown around with Michigan and LSU..I live in Atlanta and Tenuta is highly respected...A source close to GT said they were very surprised by Tenuta going to ND..He had many offers.

A "highly respected" Georgian with a nasty and aggressive defensive style..i know the info of this situation was allegedly leaked out early but could this possiby be a strategic move to sway Keith Wells in ND's direction? Does anyone know if Tenuta is gonna be in South Bend this weekend?

Also, I wish Coach Lewis best of luck. He's a class guy.

The whole deal works out well for him. He gets a lighter job and full healthcare for those hips.

Lewis has been such a wonderful addition to the ND family. I am glad he was able to be with us.

Polian gonna be focusing on ST? The Irish need somebody to run that baby, and for someone to hold accountable. Then again, that didn't help us too much on the OL...

Polian used to focus on ST, but that was taken away last year. I'm assuming it was cause CW wasn't happy with the results. I think CW will bring in someone new for ST coach and Polian will be out.

First, GOOD LUCK to Coach on his surgery...all the best for a speedy recovery...

Second, great hire....I see it one of two ways...

1) CB is gone in a couple of years to a HC position and this is a way we can have someone in his place take right over instead of bringing someone in...at the same time as CB is still new to being a coordinator, this guy can help and teach him as he has vast experience.

2) Tenuta will be gone in a year or two...could not find a good fit this year for a HC or DC job...and took this to keep working while adding to his resume...plus he's gotta like the talent we have lined up...also, while CB learns some from his experience, maybe he can learn a bit from a guy who obviously is a world class recruiter going into just his second year of coaching

Either way...sets us up well for a while with talent and experience in the defensive coaching positions that kids will love to come here and get nasty on D!

I totally agree with this. Corwin Brown will be gone in 2 or 3 years maybe even sooner. Then Tenuta will shortly follow (If not sooner). I dont see either of these guys sticking around for very long and that worries me for the future. We need a Defensive Coordinator that is going to be good and going to be with us for the long haul. None of this temporary stuff. I torn between excitement and worry. I'm not so sure what I really think about all this. I guess we will find out.
