Rivals.com College Football - USC makes its case with rout of Illinois in Rose

If anything like that comes even CLOSE to happening I just might be done with CFB... why is it EVERY other school in the country has to abide by the BCS contract that every BCS school signed except USC...

also, yahoo has an artilce right now stating USC earned a share of the title by beating Illionis yesterday........

If you are not in the title game you can't win a title PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

Well of coarse they do, any team that isn't in the sec or USC doesn't deserve to win the NC.

I honestly don't see how a plus one sovles a thing... the third team out will still pitch a fit and you're back to square one... this year who is in the plus one?? the winner of the title game and who????? OU, USC, UGA????

same crap different game...

leave it as it is... the NCAA and BCS just need to man up and enforce their own policy

The one statement in that article that sums up my feelings... Quote "It doesn't offset the Trojans' Cardinal sin. National champions do not lose to 41-point underdogs. At home. Against a backup quarterback making his first start."
And that was just one of your two losses.

What am I missing here? This team lost to Stanford. Let's say that again. They lost to Stanford. At home. They lost to a 40 point underdog. At home. Let that sink in.
Then remember that a 3-9 ND team beat Stanford. In Palo Alto. Does any team which loses to Stanford at home merit consideration for the NC? I think not.
Yesterday, the losers to Stanford beat a 9-3 Illinois team which was rated #13 in the BCS rankings going into the game. The Rose Bowl was played a half an hour away from the campus of the losers to Stanford. Guess who won?
BFD, I say. The NC should be based on performance over the course of the year, not on which team wins its bowl by the biggest margin.
The folks over there can say what they want. The NC will be going to the winner of OSU/LSU. Period.

The coaches are the only one's that are contractually obligated to name the BCS title game winner the National Champ. The AP can name whoever they want, thats why USC and LSU split it in '03. USC would have done nothing wrong if they get named split champs, your problem would be with the writers. Yep, this system is so much better then a playoff.

One sad fact is that 3 teams - USC, OU and UGa - would likely trounce either LSU or OSU at this point...but to me the personal tradegy of this season (beyond the horror show of ND travails) has to be the fact that Boston College once again managed to derail a better program's national title aspirations...

Had BC NOT beaten VT on that ridiculous fluke of an onside kick recovery (the one that bounced off the VT player like a freaking pinball) and collection of holy-shit-how-did-THAT- NOT-get-picked throws by Ice Ice Matty, then it would have been 12-1 VT against 11-1 OSU for the title (not that I believe OSU is all that deserving, but they would be slightly more deserving than KU at 11-1).

The other delicious bit of schadenfraude that I was denied in this turn of events was seeing LSU bitch and moan about how unfair it would have been to have the VT team they trounced in September go to the title game ahead of them. Had VT finished with 1 loss they would have bumped LSU, the same team that beat them from the title game; and LSU fans could feel some of my eternal frustration from that abortion of a national title that was awarded to FSU in '93...

So, not only did I have to witness BC beat ND again in ND stadium this year, I also was denied a bit of perverse pleasure as the result of another fluky BC win over a better program - one that really did nothing for BC in terms of overall season, but was enough of a toe-stub to keep another school from playing for a national title...

If you were to ask Pete Carrol or Mark Richt which bowl game they wanted to play in this year, they both would have answered the National Championship bowl.

If you asked them why, they both would have answered because that's how you become the national champion; by winning that game.

If they really believed it were possible to be "co-champion" by being voted "national champion" by the AP, they wouldn't care which bowl they played in. But they do care. Both coaches were jockeying for votes to be #1 or #2 in the final poll for a chance to play in the NC game.

Anyone who claims the the AP creates split national champions (in post-BCS CFB) by voting is being intellectually dishonest. The AP is a self-appointed "crowner". They have no authority to create a national champion any more than we here at Irish Envy do. If we vote and "crown" someone else national champion will it create a three way spilt? No, of course not.

But you're talking about ESPN, the AP, USC, and the SEC, a group which doesn't exactly exude intellectual honesty.

it seems every year the athletic department at USC is able to "find" another national championship in USC's past.

Not exactly. What most people who have been clamoring for that matchup (including the "professional" sports journalists at ESPN) fail to realize is that it was out of the Rose Bowl committee's hands.

According to Rule 3C of the Team Selection Procedures, the Rose Bowl could have selected UGA, but only with the approval of the Sugar Bowl, and the Sugar Bowl sure wasn't going to pass up on UGA.

But you won't hear about that on ESPN, just so the talking heads can fill air-time ignoring the facts and blaming the Rose Bowl for supposedly sticking with out-dated tradition at the expense of what would have been "the game of the century" of the week.
