This is all well and good, but is he a QB guy? I know he "has" coached QBs, but is that really the same thing?

He’s coached QB’s more once he got to Toledo. At Mount he was the receivers coach/OC but also worked with the QB’s quite a bit. I can tell you one thing you won’t have to worry about receiver development. He developed 2 nfl receivers at mount and helped develop diontae johnson as well as some others.

When Campbell made him OC, he started coaching QBs. It isn't rocket surgery. If it came down to Jeff Grimes or the guy from KU, it would probably be fine. Not ideal or precisely the round peg in round hole fit, but it would be fine.

Candle was landing 3 star WR at Toledo too. Consistently. That's PJ Fleck level MAC recruiting.

I still have concerns.

Personally, I like my OC to coach QB's, but I have no concerns about MF making the right decision.

The next two OCs will likely determine Freeman’s future as a HC. Their ability to coach QBs is an extremely big part of that. It is not somewhere I would go with probably be fine regardless if I was Freeman.
Then I assure you, it's going to be fine.

But Freeman doesn't need a home run recruiter as an OC we got Freeman for that and all the position coaches. We need someone at OC that will balance Freeman's lack of offensive prowess. The list we have been hearing does exactly that and is very impressive by any standard. The first priority from what we have been hearing is play calling experience. If thats the case Hartline wouldn't even get a call.
You want homer recruiters at every position. That's how you bridge the gap

I made a post earlier in this thread regarding Candle and I’ll post it again. I’ve been in the locker room with Jason candle, he was my position coach and OC while in college. The reports of being toxic are flat out false. He was by far my favorite coach I’ve ever had. One thing people forget is he is an excellent recruiter. Hell he convinced me to not go to an FCS school and go to a d-3 school.

To be fair, it would be hard for a Mount guy to tell if another Mount guy is a dick since they all are

If nothing else, this is a whole lot more exciting than the last OC search.

I mean, it's entirely possible to be employed at one place and people have pleasant experiences with you and be employed somewhere different where they do not, right?
True.

But what ACamp was referring to was:
Hell he convinced me to not go to an FCS school and go to a d-3 school.

ACamp was just being a smartass because Candle has only coached at Mt Union and Toledo.

The QB coaching questions and concerns are valid. I don't think there is any current staff member (position coach, GA, or analyst) who has ever coached QB's, or at least at the college level or higher. The OC is going to have to be able to coach QB's. And MF's background is completely on defense, so it's not like he's of any real use (unlike LB's and other D where he can help out). If I were a good QB recruit, or currently on the roster, I'd care about who my position coach is.

MF isn't going to turn the QB room over to some 23 year old GA that was a part time starter at Chico State Tech last year.

Supposing Candle is the guy for OC, MF will still probably need to get some legit QB guy in as an analyst or recently retired backup in the league for a few years type of guy as a GA.

There's a reason guys like Dabo, Day, Sark, Riley, Dumbo Fisher, and whoever Saban brings in as OC keep getting premier QB recruits. They put their QB's in the league.

Nice! I'm from WNY (near the Sirianni's) and I decided PA football kids were just weird. I gave up a starting spot to transfer to Fisher before getting too many real head injuries haha.

Mount was an eye opener. I played against good talent but that was insane. I was intimidated just getting off the bus haha.

ah if they truly had the pick they'd be calling up Brian Hartline or somebody like that and getting him in for an interview
Hartline, the guy who’s not called a play but is known to be able to recruit a position. Sure.

Ludwig, Candle, Johnson and Lewis are all capable OC/QB guys. I believe Moorhead is too.

I'm not terribly worried about this aspect of it based on the guys who seem to be centered as the core candidates. By the time you get to be an OC, you're interacting, instructing and coaching your QB on a day to day basis for the most part in a direct fashion even if you're the OC and there is a QB coach present on the staff. Jeff Grimes, for example, would be a fine OC despite not having played QB or having been a QB coach.

Be great six days a week and excellent on Saturdays.

Not knocking you, WW. Thanks for posting.

But I hate articles like this. It's just a re-report of the Football Scoop article. Nick Shepkowski should have the decency not to try and credit himself for an "article," when his entire article is based off another article.
So I’ve run across a new to me (currently listening) podcast in Inside ND Sports which released a new podcast today featuring John Brice of none other than footballscoop.com. It’s ironic, and thanks @irishog77 for pointing that out. I will be following him from now on.

Btw, his wife is employed by ND in some capacity.

Here’s a link to the article I should’ve posted earlier!

I had to spend an entire season as a sports reporter in Portage County arguing with another sports reporter and Mount Union honk that, no, Nate Kmic shouldn't be in the Heisman Trophy running.
