Thoughts/Opinions on Notre Dame joining a conference?

ill throw in my 2 cents too.

I think ND should definitely stay independent. I forget which commentator said it this year, (Probably Holtz), but with ND's tradition us and USC are probably the only two teams that can get their own TV deal and be independents. I think ND's tradition, and their aura just make it to hard to join a conference. There is only 1 ND, whereas if we went to a conference we'd just be another team, like in the Big 10, or ACC. ND is a special place, and for anyone who went there, (I obviously haven't - I haven't graduated HS yet), will agree with this that when you go on the ND campus - you get a feeling no other campus can give you. It might be because we're just ND fans :) but that's how I feel.

Abso Freeking Lutely! I totally agree. Notre Dame needs to stay independent. I always look forward to a challenging schedual. Who else besides an SEC school has a tougher schedual year in and year out? We play ALOT of marquee games that High School kids want to play in, Wether it be ND vs Michigan ND vs Usc etc etc. As many Big Ten teams as we play we might as well go to the Big Ten if they did choose to go to a conference (which they wont do and I hope they NEVER do).

As I understand the history, the Big 10 had their chance to accept ND's desire to join many, many years ago but they chose to openly snub them. Rockne then decided for various reasons, to play a national schedule. The biggest (intended, or not) result was that ND was exposed to every region of the U.S. Thus the subway alumni were born.

Back to PSU. I believe they went undefeated in '94 when Kerry Collins & Ki-Jana Carter were starring for the Nittany Lions. Since they were a member of the Big 10, they were forced to play in the Rose Bowl. I can't remember which Pac-10 team they matched up with, but it wasn't an impressive enough win to gain at least a share of the NC. Instead, Nebraska took the whole enchilada.

I lived in Saginaw for a year (for work), lived at the Ambassador Arms apartments.

Nothing beat that place. LOL

As a fan, I would miss ND being on TV every weekend. No other team is on TV as much as ND, and that is because they are independent and can negotiate their own TV contract. Realistically, this is probably a bigger money issue, but, to me it is all about the exposure of the program to its national fan base.

This is the kind of homework assignment you would get at UM.
Personally, I'm for joining the Big 10: I'd love to kick ass against Northwestern, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Indiana every year, so we'd have four or five predictable victories. Then we could finish with 1 or 2 losses and, like Ohio State, act like we had a great year.

So we can say we had a good year if we go 8-4, but since we are an independent we went 3-9? it seems like your saying that your a good team if you have a good record. You have to prove yourself. Negetive Reps.

I've read your post three times and still have no idea what your point is.
My point was simple: playing a Big 10 schedule would allow ND to (most years) pad the record with some easy victories. What don't you get?
p.s. It's "you're saying" not "your saying." I know it's the Internet and all, but basic rules of English grammar still apply.

I love ND being independent. There is no law says that we have to be like everyone else.
