Could the BCS bowls be LESS interesting?

VT vs Kansas? What? Kansas? That's crazy.

USC vs Illinois? Why not GA? Why not put the two hottest team against each other?

OK vs WVU? Blowout City.

LSU vs Ohio State? At least they got one of the 2 best teams in the title game. Ohio State will be 0-9 vs the SEC in Bowl games when it's all over.

I sure hope the smaller bowls put together some interesting games because these bowl games suck.

Who cares that all the matchups suck?

At least we have the continued tradition of the bowl system. Raise your glass to the status quo!

There's never been a true National Champion in college football. No Playoff. No true champion. Just alot of arguing over who the true champion is.

Because if they can make it a Pac-10 and Big-10 in the Rose Bowl match-up they will.

I think I would rather watch GA v USC though.

As much as I dislike the SEC, I think GA has a better chance of stomping that Prophylactic school that I dislike more.

Yeah, they've been pretty bad before. Remeber Utah vs. a 3 or 4 loss Pitt team, or the year that FSU won their conference with 3 or 4 losses and Anquan Bolden had to play QB in the game. All things considered they're really not that bad, and I'm not sure they could have done much better given who was eligible.

Kansas lost one game and you say they should not be in there, but it's ok for a 3 loss Florida team to be in there??

Because the first at-large pick went to the Sugar Bowl because they lost LSU. Who would you really expect the Sugar Bowl to pick. Then the Rose would've had the next pick. Why do you think they would select a school from out side of the Big Ten or PAC-10, when Notre Dame or anyone else that would be far superior is not there to pick.

Outside of the NC the BCS doesn't make the match-ups, the bowl commities do.

I wish Michigan would have got the Rose Bowl bid (or anyone for that matter). I know Florida already made it known that they didn't want to play Illinois w/ some weak ass excuse about respect to both their former & current coaches. I woulda loved to see that matchup...a grudge match to be sure.

Herbie said last night that because the Rose lost OSU, they could have selected GA. Was he misinformed? Did the Sugar or the Rose get the first at large?

Mizzou beat Kansas. Their only 2 losses were to OK, possibly the best team in the country. They belong in a BCS. Kansas? They beat up a bunch of nobodies and lose thier only big game of the year.

Illinois? 3 losses with one big win. Very disappointing.

I don't know the specifics as to whom was eligible and which bowls had first picks, but it just seems like they could have created better matchups.

One caveat: I think what Zook accomplished this year does raise the bar a tad for Weis next season.

Somebody please explain to me how this is an improvement on the old system

Somebody please explain to me how this is an improvement on the old system

(Via the Roundup.)

So far as I can figure it out, if we were still living in the pre-BCS days, the slate of major bowl games would look something like this:

Rose Bowl: USC vs. Ohio State

Sugar Bowl: LSU vs. Oklahoma

Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia

Fiesta Bowl: Pick two from Hawaii, Illinois, Florida, Mizzou/Kansas, or Arizona State

Cotton Bowl: Mizzou or Kansas vs. Georgia

Maybe I'm just a traditionalist, but doesn't that seem a hell of a lot better than this mess? Just let all the good teams play each other for one more week, see how things shake out, and THEN let the press do their best at crowning a national champion. I'm as opposed to a playoff as anybody, but it seems to me that the old system was actually a hell of a lot closer to it than the current one. And at least it had history on its side. Blech.

Whole lot better!

It is, right? I mean, a WHOLE lot better. Sure, sometimes we didn't end up with the NC matchup we wanted, but the current system is just SO crappy ... it forces them to make a decision on the top two at the end of the season, which only works if there IS a clear top two. When there isn't one, we end up with weird, crappy matchups like the ones we have now, and knock out a bunch of teams - like Oklahoma, say - that should still be in the running for the NC. In the old days, a crazy year like this would have been AWESOME: it would have given us a bowl schedule like the one above, where there were four or five different games that all impacted the NC race. That's why I said that it's more like a playoff than what we have now. Plus in the old days a split title was a split title - all this BCS nonsense just reinforces the "M" in MNC. Gosh I HATE college football ...

Sugar Bowl: LSU vs. Oklahoma

Oklahoma would have gone to the Fiesta as an automatic bid.

I remebmer hearing someone else say it the other way around, but I'd probably put my trust in Herbie. It's hard to keep track of because it rotates every year, and then it can still change depending on who gets to the NC.

I'm still not suprised that Illinois was invited to the Rose over Georgia. The Rose wioll almost always take a Big Ten and a PAC-10 if possible. The only exceptions might be a very good ND team, or a great one loss or undefeated team that didn't make the NC.

Is that right? I thought the Fiesta Bowl didn't have any tie-ins.

Rose: PAC-10 Champ vs. Big Ten Champ

Fiesta: Big 12 Champ vs. At Large/Big East Champ

Sugar: SEC Champ vs. At Large/Big East Champ

Orange: ACC Champ vs. At Large/Big East Champ

People tend to forget this most of the time. The BCS was devised to determine the championship game and to be honest you can't really argue why Ohio State and LSU should not be in the championship game.

The commities pick who they want among those eligible, which we as a fan base can't really argue with since it benefits Notre Dame most of the time when we are eligible.

I agree all the BCS bowl games are going to be ugly! Especially the rose bowl! Flordia vs Mich and Wisc vs Tenn....does not look much better...the Big Ten stinks against the SEC!!!

I'm no fan of the Big 10, but last year, Penn St. beat Tennessee and Wisconsin beat Arkansas in their respective bowls.

I STRONGLY disagree with this statement...not Newc personally, just the prevailiong sentiment that somehow OSU and LSU are clearly the 2 best or 2 most deserving teams this year...

Points against LSU - they damn near lost FIVE (5) games this year - in fact Alabama AND Auburn had them on the ropes and they escaped both times; they already had TWO chances as the #1 team and lost TWO times as said #1 team...now they get a THIRD chance to play for it all while teams are denied a FIRST (OU, UGa) or SECOND chance (USC)???

Poinst against OSU - they beat exactly NO ONE this year. They are the de facto Ohio College Football Champions, but since when did beating the gaunlet of Kent State, Akron, and Youngstown State suddenly become "doing more to state their case" than Hawaii??? If the biggest knock on Hawaii is that they didn't "beat anyone" (all 13 no ones btw), then how the hell is OSU's no one's any more impressive? And why is OSU's no ones more impressive than Kansas' no ones?

IMO the two best teams in the country are not only not playing in the Title game, they are not playing each other - the situation that the BCS can NEVER address (getting the two BEST teams on the field). Oklahoma and USC are far and away the best two teams I have watched this year. Either one would beat OSU OR LSU by 14+ points on a truly neutral field, but sadly neither one will get the chance. Instead, USC will get to pound the Zooksters in the Rose Bowl and the Sooners will further expose West Virginia as a fraud as well...
