too bad.The Wizard of Oz is on and thinking about all the cycles of watching this show. And its got green in it so...

-as a child. so excited you can't see straight. in your jammies, on the floor glued to the screen, hiding from that witch and those evil flying monkeys

- Around 10 years old when you realize the Emerald City in the background isn't a real city, just a painted backdrop.

-in college. do a shot or a hit off a beer bong everytime they sing "we're off to see the wizard". truely. if you have never watched The Wizard of Oz stoned, you have never really watched The Wizard of Oz

-the first time you watch it with your own child. i don't know who is more excited.

-the time you watch it because you can't find the remote

LMAO......I had it on tonight because I couldn't find the remote while tinkering around on the interwebs....but then kept it on after I found the remote because my 4yr-old son had joined me - and I'm still not sure who's enjoying it more.

EDIT: I just hope those damn flying monkeys don't give him nightmares as they did me:)

This is solely for clarification HctI so you don't think I cherry-picked SouthernIrish's post and get your panties in a bunch and ban me or something:

The quote in my response was SouthernIrish's complete post at the time. There was nothing in his/her post at the time about the bag of tricks nonsense.

Were you aware the writer designed it around the American west and Manifest destiny. Everything in it relates to something else.

Wicked Witch of the East = Big Business

Wicked Witch of the West = Western Enviroment/Weather

Flying Monkeys = Indians

Yellow Brick Road = Oregon/Santa Fe Trail

Etc.

What about the first time you see the guy hanging himself in the background?

(Wait - everyone knows about that, right?)

There are a number of different theories about the book. Some say it is very political. One theory is that the yellow brick road represented the gold standard at the time and Dorothy's silver slippers represented the new silver standard that was being proposed.

Yet another legend has the yellow brick road based on a real road made of yellow bricks in a Michigan town where the author, L. Frank Baum spent his summers.

In his introduction included in the first productions of his book, the author stated that it was written "solely to please the children of today."

i think i heard about that during the college-beer bong cycle

I think it was a middle school thing for me ... it's in the background of the scene with the crazy talking trees and the witch. Unmistakable.

Okay, maybe not quite unmistakable, but ... well, judge for yourself.

They taught the theory I mentioned to us during the first semester of US History my Jr year of high school.
