To my fellow IE teammate's,

This Saturday, 10 November 2008, is the 232d anniversary of the founding of the United States Marine Corps.

On 10 Nov 1775, the Continental Congress authorized that two battalions of American Marines be raised to join the fight against the British. So in a small tavern in Philadelphia, PA, Tun Tavern, Marine Capt. Samuel Nichols went to work recruiting able bodied men to join the Marines with the promise of adventure and a ration of rum.

Since the American Revolution to the present time, your Marines have fought in every battle this nation has entered. The Corps battle colors are adorned with the campaign streamers commemorating the places were Marines have gone about the business of winning the nations battles. From the first landing at New Providence, Bahamas, to the current operations in the War on Terror, your Marines are always on the job, "from dawn to setting sun".

In 232 years many young men and women have worn the eagle, globe and anchor with pride....the pride of the very nation they serve. Some have grown grey in the many years of battle, and many have given their very lives for this great land.

In my current assignment as a Marine, I often get to travel to our bases and visit with these great warriors. And I want you all to know how grateful they are to serve each and everyone of you and our great nation.

So on this Saturday I ask that you take time out of your day to think about your Marines and raise a glass in honor of the 232 years of faithful service to the United States. If your at Notre Dame for the game against Air Force stop by the Grotto and light a candle and say a prayer for your Marines serving in harms way.

And if you see a Marine this week, no matter if they are on active duty, retired or a former Marine, wish them a hearty "Happy Birthday".

Actually the Marine Corps and the Navy are two seperate services in the Department of the Navy. They have two seperate service chiefs, The Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Chief of Naval Operations who both report to the Secretary of the Navy.

My wife, who is a sailor, asked me the same question when we first met saying "The Marines are in the Department of the Navy right?" I replied "yeah, we are in the Mens Department!" That got her!
