I understand the give him time argument but if he is not healthy then why is he playing. If he is healthy he has been horrible when given time and do not give me the comp % argument...(50) 2 yard dumps are not impressive!!!!! Jimmy was a product of a GREAT HS system and is just an average QB...I hope I eat my words someday but what have all you seen that makes you think Jimmy is that good! I think sharpley should start the next 2 years and Crist after that!!!!

IMO, Clausen (if healthy) would / should / will absolutely start ahead of Sharpley - if not this year then without a doubt in 2008.

Reason?
Not my expert evaluation of the QB position, but CW's.

One thing we should all be able to agree on is that despite this year's house of horrors season and multiple HEAD COACHING mistakes, if there is one thing that should remain beyond reproach at this point it would be CW's ability to recognize and develop talent at the QB position.

From his days with the NYJ (Lucas, Testaverde having career years under Weis) through ND (Quinn becoming what he did and attributing much of the credit to Charlie), Weis has proven again and again that he is able to at the very least help develop QBs (and in the words of those QBs themselves - specifically Brady and Quinn - he does a lot more than just help)!

Given that Weis was sold on Clausen as the starter prior to any injuries or surgeries this year; and that Weis also put him into the fray behind arguably the worst college offensive line in the last 30 years - ahead of Sharpley in the first place, I would say those are ringing endorsements from a man much smarter than myself in the area of QB potential, development, and fundamentals.

While I may harbor doubts (private and publically) about Weis' abilities as a head coach, his track record with QBs is unblemmished and gives no reason to doubt him or believe he suddenly became stupid with QBs overnight.

IMO, the QB 3-deep should look like this for the next few years (just loves me some good old fashion DCE!):

2008
Clausen 1 (SO)
Sharpley 2 (SR - no 5th year option extended beyond this season, goes on to full-time baseball; he has shown the ability to be a decent back-up, but not one who could come in and win games - he'll make an excellent tudor for Dayne....)
Crist 3 (FR - DNP to save a year of eligibility and watch; a luxury Clausen did not have)

2009
Clausen 1 (JR)
Crist 2 (SO)
HOT NEW QB RECRUIT 3 (FR)
**unless Crist is good enough to take the job away, if so Clausen likely transfers to Tenn.**

2010
Clausen 1 (SR)
Crist 2 (JR - with 3 years of eligibility left)
HOT NEW QB RECRUIT 3 (SO)
**unless Crist is good enough to take the job away, if so Clausen likely transfers to Tenn.**

I would agree with your 08,09,10 analysis except for the fact that I don't think clausen will ever transfer to UT.

Sharpley barely saw the field last year. His final season stats were 1-2 for 7 yards. As for Clausen getting quality PT? Wouldn't it be safe to say that he has already gotten some quality PT this year? If Clausen is 100% go, then I don't mind seeing him in there. But, if he is only 95% go, why risk aggravating a "ding", and it becoming a full blown injury?

Is that all? Don't get me wrong, I like having Weis as coach. But could it be that we're having problems at QB now because Charlie wouldn't put Evan in more last year? It seems to me, CW depended too much on getting a very high caliber QB for this year instead of nurturing Evan to be starter (or Jones or Frazer).

Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner. Charlie admitted as much when he said after the SC game that he intends to get the young guys some playing time. Whether he would admit he needed to do it last year, I don't know.

But I agree, he should have already known who the starting players were going to be last year, especially QB. The incoming guys would have a chance to come in and take the job, but we shouldn't have had so many positions up in the air starting summer camp.

Like I said, Weis is a great coach and I really think he will be great for ND. I just think he screwed up royally last year by not playing the younger players more. I seriously doubt we'd have the problems we're facing now.

(Best Marlon Brando voice): "We coulda been a contender!" :)

I'm glad he's decided to play the younger players. The experience they gain, will definitely help us next year.

If the Irish are not up at the end of one, they really need to put in Clausen.

I would bet dollars to doughnuts that Clausen sees a bunch of PT over the next four games. I bet this even if Sharpley lights it up. They will both see time, whether it's second half time or whatever.

Apparently Clausen was the product of a great HS system and a fraud, but Crist (still in HS) is the savior. Snore. Give the kid a break. When Crist gets to South Bend, give him a break too.

That sounds like something we need in sportsbook. Now how do we get the donuts to the winners?

Well sorry to call you out, but this seems dumb on several levels so allow me to retort:

A - He isn't healthy and he isn't starting - the injury isn't enough to keep him completely out of the game, and so far has been out best starting QB. Weis plays to win games, and seeing as Jimmy offers the best chance to win, he kept him in as the starter for as many games as he could justify.

B - When exactly has he been given time? This implies that when he is given time he has open targets (which he doesn't) and our pass pro is still not good enough to offer consistent protection on any given drive.

C - Yes, he was very successful in high school. Part of the reason they looked so good was his excellent supporting cast (ie Mark Tyler). However, when EVERY recruiting service/analyst is drooling over the kid and he is Charlies only QB target - its hard to believe that they would be wrong. Maybe this has something to do with him starting as a true freshman?

D - What has anyone seen that makes Clausen look good? How about throwing 5 interceptions through 6 starts when there are very few real opportunities throw? The third-stringer for UCLA racked up that number against our D in a SINGLE GAME with a solid supporting crew. No one back there is going to anything spectacular - put in Quinn, Palmer, or Vince Young as a freshman and they wouldn't do squat either. For being an injured freshman with no o-line I'd say he looks impressive.

E - Why do you think Crist is better than Clausen? Has there been any objective comparison? Did they play each other? Have they played together? All the hype around any high school player is just that until they move to the next level. I hope Dayne kicks ass once he gets to ND, but he isn't here yet and he is unlikely to immediately supplant either Clausen or Sharpley. It's an unrealistic expectation.

Now as for Evan starting against Navy... any chance we run the option?

I would agree with piyachion this. Clausen is much more accurate than Sharpley. Love Sharpleys heart, he just doesn't have the accuracy to throw the ball 30-35 times a game like Jimmy does. Jimmy is our future. We just need to get everything around Jimmy solid.

He said in a presser that it wouldn't be fair to pull Sharpley for losing to SC, because lots of people lose to SC. Also, the practice reports from this week have Sharpley with the first team and taking most of the snaps.
