The most important thing is not who the win was against, or how badly UCLA played (it was pretty awful) but that we finally got a win, and the boys got some confidence. There's still a TON to be worked on, but it's always easier to work on stuff after a win than a loss. Obvious we could harp on negatives or mitigating factors all night, but in the end, we won. And it feels pretty damn good.

Well said. That's the kind of attitude we should all have.

anyome have details? i couldn't watch it. i need a recap of personal observations...

Far be it from me to withhold my opinion.

Trevor Laws won the game for Notre Dame. He set the tone for the game with his muscle play and athletic ability. He made tackles, rushed the qb, blocked passes. The D-line followed his lead. Maurice Crum was all over the field. Tackles and interceptions. One of the most impressive efforts from a linebacker I have seen in years, anywhere in the country. Other linebackers were inspired by his lead. Zibby played smart football. Punter played an almost brilliant game. Defense overall played like they wanted to win a national championship TODAY. They still have no concept of leverage and getting lower than those they are tryin to tackle or shed a block from. They still don't know how to tackle. Special teams look like they have been coached. They looked inspired. Offense: Backs are super, but nowhere to go. Travis is still a man among boys, and I think CW simply does not know how to coach him. Expect great things from his in the pros. Line has improved. Clausen should be benched for a couple of years and maybe accept a backup role to Sharply and whoever wins next year's competition. He is going nowhere fast. Has a bad throwing action. He was the worst athlete on the field. Even UCLA.s walkon gained confidence and looked better than he did as game progressed. CW's play calling is still too geared to his Pro football experience. He forgets that college students have to go to class, get homesick, etc. 1st and goal from 15 inches out and he rolls out Clausen. 2nd and 8 after the sack. Total stupidity. He needs to fire himself from the offense.

Irish win. Defense and attitude won game.

Wow. This post started off REALLY well - how about those special teams and linebackers, huh? - but this bolded part is just incredibly stupid. Sheesh.

And with that, goodnight folks!

johnnd05. Get over your crush on me. I'm taken. Flattered by your attention, but, well, ok, I'll meet you after work tomorrow. Just don't tell anyone, O.K.? I'm on top.

It only gets better from here. Remember we return 18 starters next year and 20 or even 21 in 2009. NC here we come!

A win is a win, albeit against what Lee Corso called the most inconsistent team in college football. Going forward, I think we're missing an opportunity by not starting Sharpley. Need to put up some points and collect some yards to compete with BC, ranked 13 nationally in passing offense: 312 yards/game. Reality check, fellow domers: THAT IS THREE TIMES THE NUMBER OF TOTAL YARDS THAT WE PUT UP AGAINST UCLA TODAY.

jones...crum was BIG...what was wrong with the play calling?...they're a bunch of kids...yes jc must get rid of the ball sooner, but he'll learn....play calling will look much better in the future when this happens...we would not have won this game 2 weeks ago...baby steps yes, but we are getting better...

i cant believe some of the comments i am reading. Guys, WE WON!!!!!! Our offense did what it needed to do. It converted on the opportunities that our defense gave it.

I'm thrilled with the win. But I'm also trying to be realistic. DID our offense convert the opportunities that the defense gave it?

In the first quarter, the defense gave the offense the ball at the UCLA 1 yard line. Result: 3 plays for -1 yards and a field goal.

In the third quarter, the defense gave the offense the ball in UCLA territory twice:
After starting at the UCLA 31, the offense went -6 yards in 3 plays and was forced to punt.

After getting the ball at the UCLA 2, the offense took 3 plays to go 2 yards for a touchdown.

In the last 12 minutes of the game, the defense had 3 INTs while the Irish were trying to run out the clock. The results:

Drives of 4 plays, 5 plays, and 5 plays. 3 turnovers, and the offense got 2 first downs while trying to run out the clock.

The offense did NOT take advantage of the opportunities that the defense gave them. They managed not to lose the game for ND, but they sure as hell didn't contribute a whole lot to the win.

There is no reason to make excuses for the offense. We have two games against Top Ten teams coming up. If the same offense shows up in those games, we are going to get killed.

I just got home from the game. This was my first Irish game and I was surrounded by Bruins. What a feeling to watch the Irish get their first win of the season when all around me everyone was saying we were going to lose.

By the end of the 3rd quarter the UCLA fans started leaving.

I am now watching the game on TV so I can continue to enjoy this one. Go IRISH!!!!!!!!

Charlie's play calling stunk tonite.

That was my first reaction, too. But, think about it............what are you going to call, when NOTHING is working? You have to start pulling out all of the stops.

No one is saying the kids shouldn't celebrate. Don't kid yourself.........they really don't give a rat's ass about what any of us are saying on here. But, as fans, we have to maintain realistic expectations. And that includes analyzing the game honestly. Even in a win. Not all wins are pretty, but you can't put on rose colored glasses just because you won.

Best $21.95 I ever spent. Just got to watch the tivo replay after getting home from work. What a hot mess, but what a relief!!! Crum needs to stay next year!

Let's hope we get some home mo-jo cooking next week. Can't wait to be back in South Bend for the SC game on 10/20.

GO IRISH! BEAT THE FLUTIES!!!

We finally did to UCLA what other teams have been doing to us. When you win the field position battle, good things happen.

Like stupid throws out of your endzone that are intercepted. UCLA HAD 7 TURNOVERS? WHAT? Crazy. Give the defense some credit, they played great.
