In case anyone needs to get their minds on something non-football-related:
Notes from ND Men's Basketball Pick-up

Notes from ND Men's Basketball Pick-up
We got here in time to wander over to the Joyce Center and view Notre Dame's men's basketball team playing some pickup basketball. Generally, the Irish look more athletic and faster than last year, but here are some things that stood out:
- Zach Hillesland was sitting out but no worries, he just hurt an ankle playing pickup on Friday night. He said he'll be fine by Monday.
- Our early, early pick for Notre Dame's best player: sophomore Luke Harangody. Harangody dropped some weight in the offseason and is running the court much better. Plus, it looks like he gained some vertical, as he had one dunk that reminded us of the Tom Chambers dunk in the original "Lakers Vs. Celtics and the NBA Playoffs" for Sega Genesis. His body looks more like a beach volleyball player's now -- actually a lot like Steve Timmons.
- Rob Kurz is going to be a player again this year. He is pretty much automatic inside 10 feet.
- Of the freshmen, Tyrone Nash looks to be the most ready. His body looks more like a junior than a freshman and he can run the court very well. Tim Abromaitis also looks more ready than we initially thought. Carleton Scott is very, very long and made one of the best plays of the day. He grabbed an errant alley-oop pass by stretching his arm out and ended up putting it in for the score.
- Recruit Klay Thompson, a small forward from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., was in town on a visit. If Notre Dame gets him, he'll be a very, very good pickup. Thompson, the son of former NBA player Mychal Thompson, has a smooth shooting stroke and a very quick release. His stroke is cleaner than Colin Falls and he is rangier and more athletic as well. He appeared to fit in very well with Notre Dame's players and we heard one player shake his head after one of the pickup games and say "He's good."
- Tory Jackson and Kyle McAlarney played on opposite teams and went at each other often. Both, too, were able to make 3-pointers. If they do it during the season, it'll stretch the defense well.
- Miami Heat and former Notre Dame point guard Chris Quinn was in attendance, equaling Celebrity Sighting No. 2 this weekend.
