everyone should also bear in mind that while we may have a rivalry with michigan, notre dame can't negotiate a series directly with them. all series are negotiated through the big ten. it is not always a matter of nd dropping an opponent or even the opponent dropping the irish, but sometimes boils down to contracts we have with the conference and the conference's choice of opponent for notre dame. there have been numerous occasions where we haven't played michigan for just this reason. in fact, msu and purdue have been more common opponents for us in big ten play. think back to the late 80's and early 90's when notre dame was taking every big ten opponent to the woodshed and ruined michigan's national title hopes early in the season. as a result, the big ten pulled michigan from our schedule in the mid 90's and substituted ohio state. sometimes the control over such situations lies not with notre dame.

Sorry, but not true. We do negotiate directly with these schools, hence we have MSU, Purdue, and UM. We've played Purdue and MSU for years, and although UM taught us the game of football, once we were good enough to beat them, they wouldn't schedule games with us. After a pissing match between Michigan's Fielding Yost, and our very own Knute Rockne, the schools only played off and on until the late 70's. The result was a handshake in which we would play each other first game of the season, but for one reason or another, we broke that agreement to play an opponent before UM one year. We didn't play UM in the mid 90's so we could get OSU on the schedule. We asked them to suspend the series so we could do that. Years ago, ND tried to gain admission into the Big 10, but UM and OSU blocked us every year. It got to be so bad, that only Purdue and MSU would compete with us in any sports, so that is why they are on our schedule every year. All of this can be found in a book called "Natural Enemies", by John Kryk. Great book if you have time to check it out.

As long as ND does not get a complete cupcake schedule, we will be ok. I am ready for a NC. I was six the last time we had one.

When he says he wants to schedule like an independant, he's really talking about playing bottom feeders, and candyasses at this point, right? The only teams I've heard mentioned are WSU, and Baylor. Sorry, but they suck.

I couldn't agree more. White is doing a horrible job.

No, he's talking about ensuring the schedule stays in the Top25, but does not become so bad that we never have a shot at a National Championship.
