Take a look at the last national championship roster, they were fairly young. You put the best players on the field irregardless of age and college playing experience. Experience can be gained, athletic ability cant.

Agreed. I think we will see several freshman make an impact this year. Guys like Kamara, Romine, Neal and JC come to mind.

Guys,
I hope we stop at 23 in this class. I feel strongly that we need balance in classes. Plus, what are you going to say next year when there are several Filer's, Floyd's and Clausen's who we have no room for since we took too many this year. If we land Filer, Floyd, Baldwin, Robinson and a RB, I hope we shut it down. This will give us solid players across the board at all positions. Remember, there will be more talent coming next season. Further, I believe that there are a few seniors that will really suprise this year and we will hope they come back for one more year. Brown, Vernaglia may really step up. Plus, it takes most kids atleast 2 years of college to find there way. The physical transition is huge.

Maybe I am missing something? Why is everyone stuck on keeping 5th year guys? If Lambert and Crum have great years then they may go to the NFL. The current younger players may prevent ND from keeping them anyways. I know you need leadersgip but... Not taking recruits based on predicting who will stay for a 5th year is dangerous, especially when the recruits may be Fortson and Baldwin who wait till NSD.

Oh please, not THIS argument again. IK basically gets the key points in his response (you win with upperclassmen, not four-stars, and we don't want unbalanced classes down the line), but while we're at it, let's just note again that this is false:

As I noted in an earlier post on this topic, the '06-07 Florida team was LOADED with upperclassmen:

Re. the question of whether you can win a national championship without fifth-year seniors, I submit the '06-07 Florida Gators (starting lineups from Wikipedia):

QB: Chris Leak (SR)
TB: DeShawn Wynn (RSR)
FB: Billy Latsko (RSR)
WR: Jemalle Cornelius (RSR), Andre Caldwell (RJR), Dallas Baker (RSR)
OL: Phil Trautwein (JR), Ronnie Wilson (RFR), Steve Rissler (SR), Drew Miller (JR), Carlton Medder (RJR)

DL: Derrick Harvey (RSO), Ray McDonald (RSR), Steven Harris (RSR), Jarvis Moss (RJR)
LB: Earl Everett (SR), Brandon Siler (JR), Brian Crum (RSR)
CB: Reggie Lewis (RSR), Ryan Smith (JR)
S: Reggie Nelson (JR), Tony Joiner (JR)

That's EIGHT fifth-year seniors among the starters ALONE. Shows what happens when you hold on to scholarships for guys who weren't good enough to leave early for the NFL.

Not to mention six fourth-year seniors and nine (third- and fourth-year) juniors. So I don't see how you can say they were "fairly young", unless you mean, say, that they were mostly younger than me.

Crum and Lambert are back for '08, no question. That makes a max of 23 (right?) for this coming year unless there are more transfers. Given the number of top-flight prospects who seem to be leaning our way, I could see us taking that many, but no more.

I meant Notre Dames last national championship. This is not a Florida Gators board.

Another thing comparing Floridas upperclassmen to Notre Dames is pointless. And I hate going here because my grandfather would roll over in his grave if he heard me talking negatively about the players. Due to our poor recruiting efforts before CW got here. Our upperclassmen, no offense to Crum and Lambert who are both good but not great players, are not going to measure up to Floridas. I dont see the need other than leadership which I already conceded, to keep guys around that LSU USC and Mich dominated If through no fault of their own there are better more talented players in the wings.

lambert and crum are good players not great, i think they both need a huge season to be asked back.we are getting to the point where we can be more selective on who we ask back and on the recruiting scene!

wjasonp71 I believe you are right . I see no reason not to take 26 recruits if the picks are all blue chip picks. No use keeping 5th year players if talent like Baldwin , Forston, A Brown, Robertson, etc. are available. Only give out 5th year if you can't get new top line talent . in recruiting the future is now Not five years ago.

IK1023 You don't win National champion ships with 3 star 5th year players like Crum and Lambert not taking any thing away from them because they play their hearts out but they lack NC talent.

Oh....please....No. Its not May of 2007 anymore when you wanted to give 5th years to all the eligible 08 seniors and only recuit 20 new players. So I'm seeing some change .

Well then obviously I can't make you think rationally so I'll have Weis do that for you when he brings back 5th years Crum/Lambert or more and then will you argue with Weis?

Have no problem with you Johnnd05. and I told you that when we were posting last May. Im just lending support to some of the posters like myself who feel strongly about the positions which we take that are different than the ones that some of the young posters on this board take. I like so many other ND fans don't post here very often because of the rude and immature personal responds from a small group of young know it all members on this board. I guess I don't feel that its rational debating of an issues of OUR football team by being told by a student that your opinion is not rational thinking. But I guess that could change with age. But as I said before Johnnd05 I have no problem with you .nor your opinions. Go Irish.

Okay, thanks.

For the record: what I said in May was that I thought 19-21 recruits in this class was "baseline", meaning we'd take more than that (but not so many that we couldn't retain Crum and Lambert) only if enough of our top guys wanted to commit, but wouldn't go after the Brandon Walkers and Brian Smiths of the world. I still stand by that, though obviously there ARE enough of our top guys jumping in board. Plus there's of course one more scholarship available because of the Frazer transfer ...

Nice hidden gut check at me. Perhaps you shouldn't post if it bothers you so much ey?

Please, let's be nice. Just turn the other cheek.

Don't disagreed with you in principle but i see the open schoolies going this way.e seems to be enough evidence to believe number 19 and 20 are Filer and Floyd right now . number 21 i believe will be Roberinson maybe yet this week. Number 22 and 23 are held for Forston and Sabino which leaves three place for a running back#24, Baldwin / Butler / #25 and # 26 for A Brown a lb / J Brown a wr or db / Pacthan a ol / Chris Harper who is an ath / Aghayere a de / or anyone else who break out between now and next Feb. My problem with Crum and Lambert they block up a position that some of these blue chipper want playing time open to compete for in order to commit.

No offer for Julio Jones? That sucks. Even if landing him is near impossible, that really sucks not to offer the best wr in the country when that is currently nd's biggest need. Floyd works fine though.
