I think a few people are taking the "Corwin Brown wants physical corners, that's why he's going after Blanton and Slaughter" thing too far.

Fact of the matter is, we can have those guys AND get a smallish, quick CB to help us.

The fact is, the majority of college football goes three-wide, and in the slot, you usually have a smaller guy. Brown can cover this with his quickness and speed.

Just because we've recruited certain types, don't get carried away. Flexibility is huge week in and week out -- if you're playing Penn State one week, yeah you want guys like Slaughter and Blanton. But when USC comes into town, you're going to need all the speed you can get.

Fact of the matter is, his size won't keep him off the field. Parcells and Belichick have constantly relied on big, physical corners (Ty Law) as well as small, fast guys (Maurice Hurst, Tyrone Poole, Asante Samuel, Ellis Hobbs).

We shouldn't get carried away here -- you need to be flexible on the defensive side of the football, and Brown gives us this flexibility. It'll be a scholarship well spent if/when he commits.

--------I couldn't agree more Katz. I'm a bit puzzled on all of the Jeremy "B" list type put downs. The staff offered him and he said that Weis is fighting for him to play offense while CB wants him as his DB. Well then....sounds like a player that our coaches aren't sold on right? Get used to hearing about Jeremy because he's coming up next week and unless something terrible happens he'll be donning the Blue & Gold for the next 4 years. Just because we have Slaughter and Blanton as more physical corners that means Walls, McNeil and Gray will never see the field because they aren't converted safties to cornerbacks. It's those same type of people who are complaining that we should've offered Compton over Poz....like I don't even know what to say to that. Jeremy is an ATHLETE and last time I checked we need those. He caught 13 balls last year...thats it.....6 of them went for touchdowns. That means every other time he touched the ball he took it to the house. We have Goodman committed and nobody else and you're already burying him on the bottom of our depth chart behind guys who aren't committed to us? thats kind of laughable. We don't "settle" on guys with early offers and offers from every team in the SEC.

that's a very good post Knight, i totally agree. i know you're not a fan of compton, and i still dont understand why people put down our current commits, but i like getting ND guys and jeremy brown and compton are both ND guys. I hope we can get both. Unfortunately for Compton to come on board, we'd have to miss on Filer or Sabino. The way it looks with those guys, Id be happy to get one anyway, so I think Compton would be a great pickup.

---I'm not a Compton hater and I think he's a good football player. I just don't like people putting down Poz. who was offered very early and only played 4 games his Jr. year for a guy who doesn't have many good offers and doesn't have an ND one. It doesn't make any sense, if he gets an offer that means he deserves it and I'll want him but if not I don't like to hear people 2nd guess Poz. on what? They haven't seen him play a game, but they have seen his highlight video of Jr. year scrimmages. Compton is moving up in Rivals rankings because he's been to like every one of their camps and done ok. Scout still has him as a 3*. As for Jeremy, he'll most likely be Irish by the end of next week so people will have to deal. How can you 2nd guess our staff on a kid the offered because you want somebody else they haven't? Maybe those people should coach at ND.

You guys need to realize that Jeremy Brown plays in the toughest conference in FLORIDA and is still a stand out. The kid is a stud and if you don't want him on this team then you are CRAZY. Absolute playmaker. Nuff said.

Umm, yeah. No question there.

A pre-emptive "Welcome aboard, Jeremy!" seems appropriate ... :gbanana:

I'm starting to think McCarthy announces before Brown visits.

They're only whispers and rumblings, but I'm hearing from Buckeye/Ohio posters that McCarthy should announce in about 7-10 days. The article Knight linked to us says Jeremy should be flown up to South Bend in 2-3 weeks. Granted, that was 4 days ago, and when Brown schedules his unofficial is TBD, but that sounds like McCarthy could beat him to the punch.

Honestly though, who knows. None of it can be taken to the bank - the only thing that can be is that Jeremy Brown is definitely sold on Notre Dame, and will be very likely to commit if and when he visits, so long as there is still a spot remaining (which is very likely).

Jeremy is visiting on the 6th - 7th. Besides, McCarthy's decision will have no effect on Brown.

Well then, forget everything I said about timetables.

I mentioned McCarthy because there might be an issue with how many DBs we take. But we'll see. I don't think it'll be an issue either. With the Frazer transfer going through officially, I think there's space for 4 DB's if we really wanted both Brown and McCarthy.

I also think Browns decision will have no affect on McCarthy's spot short term. I do think McCarthy is a tad afraid of the depth we have at saftey as he has said that we have taken alot of guys there. If a guy is scared of our depth at saftey (Which isn't like world class) then he would be better suited for another team. I don't think that is enough of a turnoff to make him go elsewhere and I see him coming here in the end.

and we are playing the University of Southern Cal and they line up with a spread set, we can match up. We can actually play man-to-man.”

Music to Notre Dame fans ears.

I was so excited to read that, I figured everyone might want to see it again

A few people on DD think that Brown is in the bag for the Irish and a commit may be coming soon. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It's now or never for Jeremy Brown, if he doesn't commit now that scholy isn't going to be there if he waits.

-------He knows that and that is the reason why he's coming up early in the first place. His committment won't be much of a shock to anyone, but it'll definently be awesome.

I know his visit is in July - but what dates specifically? Will there be anyone else around with him or is it primarily a one-on-one type visit?

We're going to have quality depth at cornerback! Holy Cow!

This class is shaping out to be amazingly awesome.

I think it's very smart what Corwin Brown is doing. He is getting enough guys so that he can field top corners to play against the 4 and 5 wide sets that USC and other teams play. That way he can play straight man to man coverage and not be at a disadvantage.

Yep. Lets look at some opponents that love to fling it that these future players could face over the 5 years.

Stanford (HC is an ex-NFL QB), Purdue (Joe Tiller's spread), Michigan (a bit of a tossup, if Carr leaves but he always throws more than he should since Chris Perry left), USC (self explanitory), Nevada (that funky half shotgun offense), BYU (similar to Purdue's offense).

And that doesn't include the balanced attacks we see that go to more of a 3 receiver/spread look with increasing frequency (Michigan State, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh). And doesn't it seem like more and more coaches that get fired are replaced by guys that bring in passing pedigrees? But I digress.

One of the things that was a nuisance with Minter was his dependence on using his base defense. Not as bad as Kent Baer, but Corwin has seen in the pros how vulnerable a LB will look in coverage. And with the 3-4, a 250+ OLB is worlds worse in coverage than the 4-3 OLB that's 230+. He knows the significance of developing good DB's, and deploying plenty of them when the occasion calls for it.

If posts I read are correct JB should be arriving in town today and leave on the 7th. Was wondering if/when JB is spotted on or near campus we could get a confirmation on here or another ND forum
