I liked it. I dont think it was one of the BEST movies I have ever seen...but I did really like it...I would definitely recommend people go see it. It seems to be as truthful as possible to a known story. Also, I thought the imagery was pretty impressive at the very least.

From what I've heard, yeah, not so much. It still looks like a pretty good war movie though and I'm sure I'll end up watching it.

If you want to get an adrenaline rush from watching a movie this is it. I saw it the first night it came out and the theater was packed and rocking, it's better than Gladiator but doesn't touch Braveheart.

It is fairly truthful...HOWEVER, the very story itself has not exactly been truthful in general. ;)

I herd that it left out the 1000 Thesbians, so instead of being 1,300 defenders, they only depicted the 300 Spartans, plus the Spartans were almost completely void of their traditional plate armor, because the creaters were going for more of a comic book feel.

I thought the Spartans actually fought in the nude--although, I haven't verified that. The movie does glorify the whole Spartan standing ground by thereselves too much. What does one expect though? Also, I was told that the Spartans also had homosexual tendencies, not just the Athenians, as implied in the movie. I'm not sure about some of those "monster" type of creatures either that are depicted in the Persian army. Finally, I'm not sure if Xerxes was a super-tall transvestite-type of a King. Again, I haven't looked into that aspect either.

Despite some of the shortcomings and questionables, I liked the movie, and would recommend it.

Yeah, it was not super accurate for sure.

The dirty little secret about the movie is that the Spartans were major slaveholders.

300 sounds good. I watched Alexander last year, and all I think of that movie is all the homosexual crap occuring. OK, he was gay, does it have to be a recurring nightmare for us dudes who just want to see action and bodybags??? Hollywood again is trying to sway our hearts and minds. I'd say God bless 'em, but I wouldn't want to offend.

No he wasn't but I just left that part out because I assumed that it was common knowlege for history buffs.

I thought the Spartans actually fought in the nude--although, I haven't verified that.

No they were actually very concerned about their appearence and they usually had plate armor that covered their lower legs, chest/back, and head. Then they usually had large hoplite shield, and very long spears. They also often spent large amounts of time gooming themselves, before battle, paying special attention to their long hair.

In a recent interview I heard the creaters of the movie talk about the changes in the soldiers uniforms that they chose to make. Instead of going with the more accuarte Bronze Age plate armor they choose to make the actors bodies the costums because they thought it make it eaier for the audience to distinguish the actors, therefore creating a better movie, and fitting more in line with the comic book feel they were going for.

Also, I was told that the Spartans also had homosexual tendencies, not just the Athenians, as implied in the movie.

That's almost laughable, the Spartan military was very much a homosexual society. Spartan military law dictated that every older soldier must take a younger/new soldier for a mentor/mentee relationship, but it was also a sexual relationship. Their thinking behind was that it created stronger bonds, and that a soldier was more likely to fight harder, and fight to the death if the men they were fighting next to was also a lover.

But it didn't stop there, they even took it a step further. A young newlywed couple was not allowed to see each other in daylight. The husband had to sneak in through the window after dark, and the wife was forced to cut her hair very short because they were afraid that if a young husband was allowed to have normal contact with his wife then he wouldn't have any desire to contine the forced military homosexual relationship.

Needless to say the Spartans were pretty wierd people. They also didn't have any kind of currency system, and they actually tried to perfect the first type of communistic society.

Thanks for the info. Some interesting stuff there.
Here's a website with some info. comparing the movie and the "real" Spartans, and it includes some comments by Frank Miller.

It's a comic book movie based on accual events. It's 50/50...the monsters and sh*t obviously comic book, but the accual war is very much based on what happend just not entirely. I remember watching a thing on it on the discovery chanel when it came out.

From what I've heard in the media in the US, only America was awful enough to have slavery. Ya mean there were others in history to do the same?????????? WOW.

I would be surprised if we EVER heard about slavery elsewhere. Americans are generally not educated enough to recognize more than a dozen other countries, let alone civilizations.

You're right. The deformed hunchback who betrayed the Spartan army (can't remember his name) wasn't deformed & monstrous in history. Also, as someone mentioned, Xerxes wasn't some gender bending superhuman as depicted in the movie.

Good, not great, movie. But I went in w/ the hype that it was the next Braveheart, so a letdown was inevitable.
