I am not sure why you guys keep saying Jenkins is a "soft" verbal. Now, I don't know what scout and rival list him as, but while he verballed to WVU, he has retracted his verbal openly, and is currently wide open, that is, as "wide open" as you can be and still appear in the picture above.

While I agree that Jenkins is as "wide open" as that picture would indicate, he actually did say after his first de-commit from WVU that he was in fact still committed to the Mountaineers. This happened at the end of February after one of his numerous visits to Columbus. The quote is actually quite memorable and I'll list it at the end of this post, but it actually prompted Rivals to list him again as a WVU "Solid, not even Soft Verbal." Just to show you that their info is often way behind what is posted here, Rivals still lists Jenkins as a WVU "Solid Verbal". B&G also re-listed Jenkins as a WVU commit after his late February comments, and still have it that way as well.

Now for the quote, because it is a classic.

"I'm still committed to West Virginia, but Ohio State is one of my other top choices."

There's a solid committment for you if there ever was one.

While what you say is true, a few months back, the same need not be true right now. Also as I mentioned before, rivals and scout are not the be-all-end-all of what goes on in the kid's mind. Also, I have learned yesterday that the withdrawal hasn't been made public. Insiders at BP commented that Jenkins doesn't want to deal with all the people he would deal with if he openly retracted his commitment, especially after WVU being his hometown. Just fyi.

Thanks for bringing that one up again, IUB. Always good for a chuckle. I think Jenkins is going to go down in recruiting lore along with Barksdale and "the University of LSU" ... (zing!)

You are absolutely right and I thought I was pretty clear that I agree that Rivals and Scout are not the be-all-end-all as you put it, in fact in many cases they are far from it.

However, don't you find it hysterical that Jenkins thinks he might be hiding his latest de-commit from WVU when a picture of him with Brewster, Shugarts, and Adams appears on a ND fan site like Irish Envy. Does Jenkins really believe that same picture isn't all over the West Virginia blogosphere. It's sort of like Paris Hilton really thinking that her homemade porno flick was not really going to show up on the Internet.

You are absolutely right and I thought I was pretty clear that I agree that Rivals and Scout are not the be-all-end-all as you put it, in fact in many cases they are far from it.

I don't think the issue is with the picture. I am sure that if I dig in, I can find pictures of players from most schools with commits to another school on a visit. What I find troubling is, if true, his reluctance to face something that he perceives is going to be a problem. That says a lot about a person's character. I don't think that retracting commitment from one school to give to another is as much as an issue if you have the courage acknowledge that your first decision may be incorrect, and do it in an open and transparent way.
