Yeah, my mistake. I should have read more carefully.

Here's a more appropriate link. USC is at 19, which seems pretty respectable to me.
http://bwnt.businessweek.com/bschools/undergraduate/07rankings/index.asp

It should go without saying that US News rankings, based as they are on number-crunching rather than on-the-ground experiences, are notoriously not the best way to evaluate the goodness of an undergraduate education. I'm sure that one could get a fine education at SC if one wanted to, and maybe that's what Beal intends to do, but the fact is that Notre Dame is massively more demanding of its undergraduates. I say this as someone who's taught as a graduate student both at ND and at Cal-Berkeley, and has seen how much ND asks its undergrads, athletes included, to do on the academic front. But I suppose I've beaten this horse before ...

hey guys, lets not crucify the kid before anythings confirmed. Unless someone can show me something besides a rumor I gotta believe the kids still in play.

So, does the silence in this thread over the last few days mean that Beal did not, in fact, commit to the Condoms? If not, what's the scoop on his status?

Haha well he attended Ohio States spring game this weekend and guess what happend? He was tempted to commit. Apparently he not only loves each school he visits, but wants to commit to each one everytime he visits. Will decide on his Birthday October 12th on ESPN and has a Top 5 of OSU, USC, Florida, ND, and BC.

That's it - I'm officially done tracking Beal's recruitment. He can come if he wants, but in the meantime I'm not losing any sleep over him.

He'd be a great prospect to land, but you're right. Despite having a 4.3 GPA, it looks like he doesn't know what he wants... unless he's laying some elaborate smokescreen that is so intellectually astounding that nobody in the country can figure out where he wants to go. :)

I think Beal is good kid and I don't think he's doing any of this on purpose I think he see alot of things he likes in all the schools and he gets caught up in the moment. But with that said ND isn't going to wait for him, I think they really like him and he's damn good player but they won't wait it out for him like they will for Hale and Brown.

What is very interesting about the whole Brendan Beal situation is that he was in South Bend early last week, and of all the schools that he mentioned as still being in his Top 5, Notre Dame is the only one that he did not rave about. In fact if you look at Rivals or Scout, you would not even know he was here, and there was talk that the visit went poorly, so poorly that Beal was allegedly still talking about USC while in South Bend. Yet, after all of that and another "amazing" visit to Columbus for their spring game, ND is still listed in his Top 5. Rivals actually lists his interest in BC as low, and shows medium interest for ND and the unholy triumvirate.

Something about all of this doesn't smell right in Poughkeepsie. Losing Brewster to one of the unholy ones is not surprising, but the Beal situation, not withstanding all of the posturing, is a different story. I know quite a few couples who both attended BC like Brendan Beal's parents, and athlete or not, they would be horrified at the thought of their child attending so-called undergraduate educational institutions such as USC, OSU, and Florida. (Fair warning, please do not attempt to say that Florida has a good graduation rate again, because I have all of my guns ready to blast that myth away for the 100th time.) Beal has said that he will make his announcement on his birthday, (Oct. 12th) and I believe we will be hearing very little about him until then, which is probably the best thing for ND. After a summer of pondering his future away from the likes of the Cockwad, the Poodle, and McSweater Vest, I am still of the opinion (minority though it may be) that on October 12th, Brendan Beal will choose between BC & ND. The only question is whether ND will still have a spot available for him by then.

The one thing I hear kids say all the time is that USC,OSU,FL and LSU put their guys in the NFL. That isn't true or else the NFL would consist of guys just from those schools. The NFL looks at as many guys they can(look at the saints), all coaches knows this and I wish some of these kids would see that. The NFL has men from all sorts of schools you jsut have to be able to play.

the one thing that Benn said during his recruitment that zooker told him that I agree with, god i hate to say that. Zook told him that if your good enough, it doesn't mater where you go to school, the NFL will find you.

There is one thing that he said that makes sense

This is true, but a player at a major university (like Notre Dame) would get looked at before a player at a weak program or a mid-major; such as, *cough* ILLINOIS *cough*

That is true to a certain extent, but you might want to explain that to Marques Colston the 252nd player in the draft and rookie of the year in a Vince Young-less world because somebody owes him about 50 million dollars.

Not that Illinois is Hofstra, but it would be a fair fight.

both your points are true, I am not saying that the non competitve schools are at a disadvantage. I am just saying if a kid works hard enough and is good enough, they will get noticed.

walter payton, jerry rice, mike singletary, john elway, dan marino, brian urlacher, etc all didn't go to major schools, they turned out to be pretty good nfl players.

I completely agree with you, I just had a shot at Illinois and had to take it.

Word around Roxbury today is that both CW & the Cockwad stopped by to see Beal today. No word on whether they ran into each other, but I would assume there would be some semblance of cordiality. CW supposedly signed autographs, while the Cockwad was all business, did his thing, and left, but that may be just ND Message Board fodder.

in defense of the cockwad, he has over 100 offers out, so he is a busy guy, he has to get back to texting before the ban kicks in.

F'n jerkoff!!!

Never thought I could despise someone more than Spurrier, but Meyer is miles ahead of him. At least spurrier was funny and had some good zingers against rival schools.

Latest news out of the Beal camp is that ND is in his final five, along with BC, and the unholy triumvirate. He also is wavering on his previous statement that he would announce on ESPN on his birthday, October 12. Now he is saying that it will be October 12, or at the AAA game, he still has not decided which. I am still of the opinion that a future Wall Street investment banker wannabe will realize over the summer that the unholy ones are not suitable for his career pursuit, and that ultimately he will choose between his legacy and the Irish. The only problem may be that if he does wait until the AAA game, he may not have an Irish offer to choose from, at the rate the class is currently filling up I do not see them holding a schollie for Beal until January.

Marv, are you trying to tell me that you do not have much faith that young Mr. Beal is capable of doing the right thing.

IUB, I have more faith that they NY Times will do an accurate story on President Bush than Beal picking a school for the "right" reasons.

He is very easily star struck I think and more than likely the final two schools in his decision will be the two that are playing for a national title next year.

Well no need to worry then seeing we will be one of the two.

I'm probably one of the few people left around here that has any hope on Beal coming to ND. Well I should say I was one of the few. Beal for the first time today said that the unholy triumvirate is leading the pack for him, with 7 other schools including ND slightly behind. If this quote is accurate, then I have to concur that there is no reason for optimism on Beal. It is highly disingenuous for someone to claim that they are highly interested in academics, and then say that USC, OSU, and Florida lead the way as far as their school choices go. As Marv said earlier, Beal is star struck, and I no longer believe that a summer of contemplation will cure him of this particular illness.

In any case, when the time comes for Beal to make his decision, I am hoping that ND will not be looking for any more LB's anyway. With Hale a no possibility, Brown a dream more than anything, Beal & Sweat highly unlikely, and Filer more iffy with each passing day, Etiennne Sabino looks to be ND's best shot at the next LB. Since Sabino is probably better than all of those guys with the exception of Brown & Hale, successfully getting him to come to ND would compensate for the loss of guys like Sweat, Beal, and Filer, all of whom at one time or another looked like strong possibilities for ND. It would be nice though if these guys would make up their minds, or at least say that ND is not in their plans, because then the staff could extend another LB offer or two. However, the timing of that does not look promising, and we may not see another LB offered until September or October, if at all.
