Sorry guys, as I am sure you all have had about all you can take of the whole Quinn v. Russell debate with the draft looming ahead I just couldn't help but post this. Its one of those "What If?" articles written on ESPN that talks of the whoe Leaf/ Manning debate.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2750640

"Manning was viewed as the conservative choice, while Leaf, who had a considerably stronger arm, actually was thought to have the bigger upside. Indianapolis ultimately went with Manning; while San Diego traded up to the second pick to land Leaf, inking him to a contract that included, at the time, the largest signing bonus ever paid to a rookie."

I think thats my favorite part. I can't help but enjoy the "bigger upside" and "stronger arm" comparrisons while Manning was the more conservative choice.

The parallels are mind-blowing, its almost the exact same debate as it is this year, however I don't remember Manning having as much bias towards him as Brady does, but who cares. The basic points are Manning was the long term starter at Tenn. whle Leaf had an impressive junior season and chose to leave early because of that "incredible upside and strong arm". I guess the NFL and those ESPN experts will never learn and continue to hype the flash in the pan player rather than congratulate and praise someone with a strong work-ethic and talent. Oh well, whoever is smart enough to pick up Brady will surely get the Manning in this years QB debate.

I think that article summed it up perfectly. Russell is getting the benefit of the doubt for one strong season (although i wouldn't say incredible) and an incredibly strong arm, but hey, if the Raiders wanna pick him, more power to them.

P.S. Moss will actually try with a badass QB.

Manning actually did have quite a bit of bias vs. him coming out of Tenn. He was labeled as never winning the big one...especially vs. Florida (sound familiar?). He came back for his Sr. season to win a NC & Heisman (he was the overwhelming favorite coming into his Sr. campaign). He won neither much like Brady. SEC fans were quick to make a case that he was robbed of the Heisman b/c of ESPN bias vs. the SEC & Tennessee in particular (can't remember the precise reason). I typically can't stand the SEC, especially the Vols, but I tend to agree w/ them regarding the Heisman. IMO, he deserved it over Charles Woodson. But I'm sure Manning doesn't mind now based on how things worked out.

One thing I hope one of you can clarify b/c my memory fails me sometimes. Didn't Mel Kiper, Jr. argue that the Colts would regret taking Manning over Leaf & that he & Bill Polian got in a heated argument on ESPN's draft show? If so, I guess Polian got the last laugh.

Which is why he probably wants them to choose Russell if he even stays in Oakland. He wants a QB, like Favre, who can out-throw the world so Moss can outrun the world & under the pass for an easy 6. That's probably one of the big advantages that Russell has over every QB...that cannon arm that allows him to throw 80-yd bombs from the toilet seat in the locker room (allegedly!):jerkit:

Indy obviously learned a lesson from the Jeff George 'experiment' (from Wiki):

"George was always known for his strong arm, and it seemed that he was destined for NFL stardom."

"What should have been a dream career with the Colts, who traded to make him the first pick in the 1990 draft and then rewarded him with the richest rookie contract in NFL history, turned ugly almost from the start."

while Al Davis may never learn:

"George looked like a perfect fit with the Raiders, who have always loved vertical passing in the Al Davis era, and whose fans seem to embrace players who have long since worn out their welcome in other NFL cities."

I don't think that Manning won a National Champ. at Tennessee. Didn't Tee Martin QB the Vols when they won the year AFTER Manning left?

so if it's really deja vu, frazer/clausen/jones/sharpley should QB the Irish to a national championship next year. that would be perfect.
