Zach Frazer: the invisible man?

In the QB debate, you hear a lot about how Jimmy Clausen is OMG THE BESTEST QUARTRBAK EVAR!!!!1! You hear a lot about Demetrious Jones and his legs. You hear a lot about how Evan Sharpley has the experience edge on everyone else. And almost invariably, when people pick who they want as the starter, it's one of those three.

I'm just curious: why does nobody talk about Zach Frazer?

Think about it: he was a very highly-touted QB recruit in his own right, considered to be about on-par with Jones. He doesn't have the mobility of Jones, but he supposedly has a better arm, which right away makes him a better fit in the sort of passing attack Charlie Weis likes to run.

He has less experience than Evan Sharpley, but the recruiting services gave Fraser more stars... for whatever that's worth. That could just mean that Frazer is over-rated, or that Sharpley is under-rated, but the star ratings are just right enough just often enough that they can't be ignored. So in terms of pure talent, Frazer seems to have the edge over Sharpley.

And while The Emu has 5 stars and a choir of attending angels that breaks out into song whenever he so much as looks at a football, there is one thing Zach has that The Emu doesn't: a season on the sidelines soaking in knowledge from Charlie Weis and Brady Quinn.

I've previously pulled for Sharpley just for the experience factor, but I'm starting to wonder if the best all-around choice might be Frazer.

...

But didn't you hear DD was wearing a baseball cap, holding a clipboard, and standing closer to Weis and Quinn. He's the next QB by osmosis.

According to some of the other ND sites, there were ?s as to whether Frazer would ever see the field. Based on his JR year in HS, I thought he was as decorated as any of the other QBs, even Mustain. Unfortunately, his SR year wasn't as fruitful as most of his fellow starters from the previous year graduated & left him w/ little experience on the offensive side of the ball for his SR year. Obviously, he can't be faulted for losing his experienced teammates & duplicate his JR year w/ a bunch of rooks, so he still seems to be a ? as to which Frazer is the real deal. Hopefully, Spring ball will give us a glimpse of where everyone stands. At that point, the boards will be filled w/ "Which QB will transfer".

Despite his mediocre stats in his senior year, he was still Rivals 9th ranked Pro Style QB. His talents were recognized despite the dropoff in production.

It's true, he really seems to be the invisible man. But we shall see. The Spring game will tell us something...so will practices. That job is SO wide open it's not even funny.

I have no doubt that Frazier will get looked at thoroughly.

Amen! I've been saying this about Frazer for awhile now. I think he will be the #1 or #2 this year.....if not I smell a transfer. Too much talent not to play. It's a good problem for ND to have though.

I've wondered the same thing about Frazier. Amidst all the talk of QB position battles, he is the one that gets lost. We aren't sure how good our O-line will block, which is the main reason Demetrius is being given the upper-hand by US, but Frazier has a really good arm, better than both Sharpley and Demetrius. He may not have better skills than Clausen, but he does have more experience. If the line is able to block well, I think Frazier may have a better chance to start than any of the other QBs based on his style of play. Although, it would be interesting to see a dual-threat running Weis' offense, last fall, Demetrius seemed to lack confidence in his arm, while Frazier would gun it all around the field.

In any case, I trust that Weis will know what is best for the team more than any of us.

Sorry evan, i don't see you being the starter. Unless he is ahead of everyone else (overwhelmingly), I think you have to go with someone who will be there for the long haul.

I honestly couldn't careless who is our starting QB, aslong as their the best player at that postion. I don't care what there name is or how many stars they had! I hope all the guys get a fair shot to compete for the starting job, And whoever wins the job will have my support. (until they mess up then I might curse them alittle)

Gah! I KNEW I shoulda looked it up first...

I see someone else already fixed the title, so I went back and fixed the rest of my original post.

Kinda highlights how invisible he is, though... nobody even knows how to spell his name! :)

He maybe invisible to people on the outside, but be sure that Weis will give every QB a hard look. He will not base his decision on name or recognition, because these next few years will be big, so the need for someone to anchor the QB position for the near future is huge. Besides with Coach Weis teaching these guys, you maybe see a Matt Cassell situation where a guy riding the bench his whole college career, gets drafted.

No, it's cool. I'm normally a stickler for details like that, but I got lazy. It may seem strange, but it really does bug me that I got his name wrong there.

Yeah, he's just as invisible as ClauSSen and WeiSS. (lol)

Well-played. ;)

Of course, I always get their names right, mainly because I'm such a stickler. But Frazer is SO invisible, a stickler like me can do a thread questioning why he's invisible and STILL get his name wrong!

(Grr, dammit... just had to go back and change the "s" to a "z" in THIS post. *sigh*)
