Villanova-Notre Dame Preview

Though Notre Dame continues to struggle on the road, the team has been unbeatable on its home court this season.

The 22nd-ranked Fighting Irish try to bounce back from their third straight road loss Thursday and remain perfect at the Joyce Center when they host Villanova in the second meeting between the teams in 10 days.

The Wildcats (14-5, 3-3 Big East) shot 56.7 percent from the field en route to a 102-87 home win over Notre Dame (16-4, 4-3) on Jan. 17. Freshman Scottie Reynolds scored a career-high 27 points to lead Villanova while Curtis Sumpter added 21, Dante Cunningham had 19 and Mike Nardi had 18.

The 102 points allowed were the most by Notre Dame in a non-overtime game since a 111-82 defeat to then-No. 1 Duke on Nov. 27, 1998.

Following an 82-58 home win over South Florida on Sunday, the Irish fell to 0-3 this season in true road games with a 71-68 defeat at St. John's on Tuesday. Russell Carter scored a career-high 32 points, including the first 11 of the second half, but it wasn't enough for Notre Dame to pull out a victory.

"I was in a rhythm. Guys were finding me and I was hitting shots," said Carter, who scored a team-high 26 points in the Jan. 17 loss to Villanova.

Notre Dame has played like a different team at home. The Irish are 14-0 at the Joyce Center, winning those contests by an average margin of more than 25 points. They have also won five of their last six home meetings with the Wildcats.

After this game, Notre Dame plays its next three games on the road and will not return home until a Feb. 15 matchup with Providence.

Tuesday's game was the first for the Irish since learning starting guard Kyle McAlarney will not return to the team this semester. The sophomore, who had been suspended since a Dec. 29 arrest on a marijuana possession charge, left school Monday after a ruling from the university.

"We played this way for eight games now. Playing-wise I don't think it has had a big effect," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said Tuesday. "I loved Kyle McAlarney. He is really like a son to me and I will miss him. To say it wasn't a dagger to all of us yesterday would be an understatement. Certainly there is closure on the situation right now."

McAlarney was averaging 10.3 points and a team-high 5.4 assists.

Villanova is playing perhaps its best ball of the season, as the victory over the Irish started a three-game winning streak. The Wildcats defeated then-No. 21 Texas 76-69 last Saturday, and won 82-73 at Providence on Tuesday.

Reynolds had 20 points and six assists for Villanova in the latest victory, and Nardi had 19 points while shooting 5-for-6 from 3-point range.

The Wildcats are averaging 86.7 points during their winning streak after scoring 75.8 per game during their first 16 contests of the season.

Just reached the 10 minute mark in the first half, and the Irish are losing 14-8. Russell Carter, Colin Falls, Rob Kurz, and Tory Jackson each of 2 points for the Irish. Neither team is shooting well, but Nova has the rebound edge and is getting to the foul line more often. Anyone else who is watching the game, feel free to post. It doesn't say it under my name, but I am the new Basketball Moderator, and we need to turn this Hoop's Forum around. Post often!

TV timeout with 3:40 left. We are down 19-16 now, but seem to be gaining some momentum. Our defense is playing surprisingly well. Colin Falls just hit another 3 as I write this, so now it is 19-19 with just under 3 minutes left.

Halftime, 25-21 Villanova. The Irish can't seem to get anything going inside, and of our 24 shots, 10 have been from behind the arc. Unfortunately we are only 2 of 10 from there. Colin Falls is keeping us in this game with 10 points, and Rob Kurz has added 7 rebounds. The only reason why the game is this close is due to our defense, and Nova's inconsistent shooting. In order for us to come back, we need Luke Harangody to get more minutes, and help crash the boards with Kurz. A comeback is definitely possible, but not likely if we continue to ignore the inside game and settle for 3's.

It is kind of hard to get things goiing when you are geting jobbed. ND is at home, and Nova is getting the calls. Carter is off today, Harangody has been in a funk lately. The team is really missing Kyle, he had a dependable outside shot that teams don't have to worry about with Tory Jackson. That charge they called on Kurz was absolute bullshit. It is hard to believe that these teams combined for 190 points last week.

18:45 left in the second half, and the game is now tied at 25. Nova already has 3 fouls, and Notre Dame seems to be playing with more intensity.

Nova already has 7 fouls now, and there is just over 15 minutes left in the game. The score is tied at 32, but I don't see how Nova can hang in there with the foul trouble. If the Irish can avoid turnovers, and make their free throws, then they should be able to remain perfect at home.

We need to slow down Nardi and Sumpter. If Nardi gets his 4th foul then they will be even more one-dimensional on offense.

7:48 left in the game and were down 52-48. Nova has a couple guys in foul trouble right now, and the crowd seems to be more alive now after Carter's free throws. Momentum seems to be shifting a little bit.

4:33 left and we are now down 55-54. Falls is going to the line with a chance to take the lead. Nardi just picked up his 4th foul, making him the fourth player on Nova to have 4 fouls.

Ryan Ayers has scored the last 5 points, and the Irish just took the lead, 62-60 with under two minutes left.

28 seconds left, and the Irish are up 66-60. Nova is on the line, but their best 3-point player, Nardi, just fouled out. Going to be tough for them to come back now.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Colin Falls scored 23 points, including four in the final 65 seconds, to lead 22nd-ranked Notre Dame to a 66-63 victory over Villanova on Saturday as the Fighting Irish improved to 15-0 at home this season.

Villanova (14-6, 3-4 Big East) had two chances to tie it in the final 18 seconds, but Reggie Redding missed an open 3-pointer and Curtis Sumpter also missed a 3. Sumpter threw up a length-of-the-court shot at the buzzer that was short and wide.

The Irish (17-4, 5-3) have won 17 straight at home, dating to last season. The streak is the third-longest in school history.

The Wildcats went ahead 60-57 on a 3-pointer by Shane Clark with 3:47 left, but didn't make a shot from the field the rest of the way.

The Irish tied the score on a 3 by Ryan Ayers, who added a pair of free throws moments later to give the Irish a 62-60 lead. Villanova had the ball, but Scottie Reynolds lost control and Luke Harangody dove for it. The ball popped free and Falls scored a fast-break basket. He added a pair of free throws with 38 seconds left to give the Irish a six-point lead.

If Nova wins, they're probably ranked next week. Luckily, ND prevented that from happening. Harangody needs to talk to Weis about playing LB/DE.

Did anyone notice that Carter didn't play towards the end of the game. It seems like he's back in Brey's dog house. Probably because of his attitude which sometimes I think hurts the team but really he needs to start acting like a caption and not a little baby freshman.
