I don't know who should start, but I think some of this stuff can be dispelled.

1. I'm not sure what a stretch limo has to do with playing ability. And if you've seen him in interviews, he doesn't seem very cocky at all. Weis won't pamper the guy, he has never pampered a QB. The attitude thing will be a non-factor.

2. At one point last year they played a football team (I think Bonaventure) that was ranked #18 in the country. They beat them something like 54-18, it wasn't remotely close, and CLaussen had a great game. But you are right that he had amazing talent around him, which definitely helped him win and boosted his numbers.

3. He was an amazing passer when he was a Sophomore in high school also, so I'm not sure what his age proves at all. If anything, it should be an advantage. Is a senior college QB typically better than a Freshman college QB? It sure seems so. They have more time to develop both physically and mentally. Claussen being the age that he is is not that big a deal. He was dominating when guys were older than him in high school, and he dominated when they were younger.

#1 his Limo actions reminded me of Chris Rix, kid had all the talent in the world but was a head case, doesn't mean Clausen is Chris Rix....just something I'm worried about

#2 Do you have a link to this, cause everything I have seen is they were a 2A school that recruited some of the states best athletes(much like my HS St. Thomas...but we played 5A)

#3 yes a Senior is much better because of the physical developing, I'm not sure Claussen will develope much more, he may be peaking physically, and be behind the curve for his age mentaly and maturity wise...these things could damper his results...

Again, I'm not saying the kid will be crap, I'm just saying I have my reservations on his greatness

Guys like Troy Smith and Vince Young were dual theats and they passed the ball just fine....

Would you say that Vince Young was as efficient a pro-passer as someone like Quinn or Leinart last year? I admit that he was close, but I don't think he was as good. Here were their passing numbers...
Young:
3036 / 65.2% / 26TD / 10 INT
Leinart:
3815 / 65.7 / 28TD / 8INT
Quinn:
3919 / 64.9 / 32TD / 7INT

And with Smith, this year Quinn ran more than Smith did, Smith passed better this year than he did last year. Last year he was a dual-threat, this year he changed himself to a pure-pocket passer and he almost never scrambled.

Perhaps his numbers are the most interesting from year to year, because it is the same guy. Of course he didn't start the entire year last year, so that has something to do with the skew in numbers, but here they are.

2005, when he was a dual-threat
2282 / 62.9 / 16TD / 4INT

2006, when he was a drop-back
2542 / 65.3 / 30TD / 6INT

Of course the difference between these numbers in not light-and-day by any means. And take into account that you are taking the best dual-threats in recent history as an example. What about a guy like Pat White, he isn't much of a passer, but is still a QB. If he couldn't run, he wouldn't be there. Here are his numbers for the year...

White:
1655 / 65.9 / 13TD / 7INT

I think it is a mentality thing. Which running is always in the back of your mind, it takes away from your concentration when you get pressure, you often bolt at the first sign of it, which will take away from your passing a lot of the time.

I thought Chris Simms showed up in Austin in a white stretch limo....

Wasn't Chris Rix just an asshole that drove an SUV with his own number decal on the sides?

It was Clausen, his family, Tyler, Matthews....I doubt the family Toyota Camry could have fit them all. They should have gotten a short bus to avoid hubub.

Actually, Clausen was quoted as saying it was actually cheaper to have them all drive around in a limo for the afternoon, then for them all to rent cars and drive them. Of course it was kind of "toungue-in-cheek", but funny nonetheless.

lets not forget something either, Troy Smith had the benefit of two good receivers who turned short passes into big gains because of the yards they got after the catch. Look at Ginn's and Gonzalez's YACs,

Smith is overrated and where was dual threat ability in the BCS game against fla?

LOL, When he was a dual threat?????????

You really don't get it, Troy Smith was ALWAYS A dual threat, he just passed more than ran. You can be a dual threat QB and NEVER RUN THE BALL, being a Dual threat just means he can do two things.

He can be Troy Smith this past year, or he can be Pat White...it all depends on what you ask him to do. If you want him to sit in the pocket and never run, he can do that, and throw the ball well.....if you want him to do both, he can do that well too...

He had a bad game....I get the hate for anything OSU due to their fans of late, however, the guy had a great career and Jones will be throwing to some damn good WR's too...

As for his one bad game...are you going to act like Brady Quinn never had a bad game...

Seriously I have no idea why someone wouldn't want a good QB who can also run if he needs to....the ability to escape pressure isn't a bad thing

This all started with Jones and Claussen, so let's bring it back to that.

Look at Jones' scouting, he was not the kind of passer in high school that Claussen was. He is a good passer, but not on Claussen's level. This isn't just the case of would we rather have reguar Claussen, or Claussen with amazing scrambling and running ability... You have to sacrifice something when talking about these two guys. A bit of passing ability or a bit of running ability.

Who cares if he was at Clausen's level in HS....what you don't see is that Jones has matured physically this year, and has probably had some darn good coaching, plus may have 10x the grasp of the system as Clausen...

But the point is this...Jones is a heck of a pro-syle QB, who can ALSO run the ball....just becuse he can run too, doesn't mean he can't pass

I agree, he has matured more, and there is no way to really know at this point, which will be the better passer. But seeing as the only info I DO have at my disposal is throwing stats and video from HS, that is the only thing we can even look at for reference, fair or not. And from looking at that video, Claussen appears the better pure passer to me.

I clearly never said the guy can't pass. I don't think he has the touch that JC has, which is the difference maker for me. One of Claussen's greatest accolades is that he is very good at hitting guys in stride, giving them a chance to make a play with the ball. Jones seemed capable as well, I just don't think he was on the same level from the tape that I saw. but he obviously is a better runner than Claussen, so that does count for something.

For the record, I picked that I thought Jones should start next year.

Any reason that the three guys currently on the roster had their QB coach Peter Vaas replaced?

Maybe Sharpley, Jones and Frazer didn't develop the way Weis would have liked?

I think Quinn knew who Vaas was. Aside from that, Weis was Quinn's QB coach for two years.

Who knows, could be anything from he was only planning on a 2 year deal because he doesn't want to be a QB coach but was helping Weis out to he ate one of Weis's fries during a coaches meeting....

I don't think it says anything about our QB's though

to he ate one of Weis's fries during a coaches meeting.

For a second, I thought I was on a USC board when I read this part of the post.

For him to be released is a real head scratcher. Not one of the guys I would have expected to get let go, if he was indeed let go. Hopefully something official comes from the school soon about the coaching changes.

Oh get over it, he's fat and it was a joke....the point remains...doubtful it had anything to do with the QB's, could have been a personality difference, to he really didn't just want ot be a QB coach...

These guys bounce around all the time

Wow. And you honestly don't understand why people mess around with your user title. :meditate:

HOLY mother of god people, are we really this sensitive....If I said maybe someone took Stewarts french fries (because he is a big guy) would you all get your panties in a bunch....

My god some of you are sensitive...

And I'm not suprised someone messed with my login....I just didn't get "narc"

BTW.....how is this staying on topic

Get over what? I don't see race or weight. I see a football coach. It seems to be brought up by the simpleton SC boardies and bloggers when they run out of intelligent things to say.

The reports are that he was FIRED, not that he ate anyone's food or wanted to change jobs. Vaas, and Minter, were fired and replaced. Firing him would be rather puzzling based on what we know now, which isn't much since there hasn't been a presser or release from the team. I just want an explanation if that was the case.

Calling a cheap shot "just a joke" doesn't make it any less of a cheap shot. And just because you think it's funny doesn't make it so.

Since you clearly don't enjoy it when other people don't like what you post, you may want to spend more time considering the question "Will people like what I wrote?" before you click the Submit button.

And if you don't care whether or not people like what you post, you shouldn't act like you do care.

Just some food for thought.

Well its nice to see we won't see you make any joke about anyone ever....

I don't care if you guys are mad, I'm just surprised that a fat joke about a fat guy got your panties that ruffled

But again, this line of discussion has NOTHING to do with football....

What got me ruffled is that we have to put up with those sorts of "jokes" already from every other college fan-base out there already. We don't need to hear it from "inside the family" on top of that.

Tennessee fan: HAHAHA YOU GOT PWN3D BY LSU HAHAHA

Irish fan: Um yeah, and you lost to Penn State, who we crushed. Your point?

Tennessee fan: Umm.... CHARLEY WIESS IS FAT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Irish fan: Um yeah, so is Phil Fulmer. Your point?

Tennessee fan: CHARLEY WISES IS FAT PWN3D HAHAHAHAHA LOSER

We get it. Charlie's fat. How observant of you. We kinda noticed that 3 years ago.

Tennesse fans get fat jokes all the time....because Fulmer is fat...so is Weis, so is Mangino, and many other College coaches...

Its the same fat joke that would be made about Chris Stewart.....if you let trolls get under your skin for calling a fat guy fat....thats your issue

...and yet you make the exact same joke that the trolls make.

Does that make you... a troll, perhaps?

Do you really want to stoop to the level of a troll? I'd like to hope you could post at a higher level than that. Fat jokes are truly beneath your level. And fat jokes about your own coach are just mind-boggling.

I don't make fat jokes at all, about Phil Fulmer or anyone else. I'm more intelligent than that, thank you.

Or a black guy black, or a gay guy gay (illiteration, though a lame one)? Point is, it's a stupid shallow comment, not a big deal, but stupid nonetheless. And I agree with VY, we hear it enough on absolutely every other board.

Go ahead and make fun of how we won the "Commander-in-Chief" trophy as well. God knows every columnist in America has as well.

Mangino dwarfs all of them.

That guy is beyond dangerously big. His doctor should be screaming at him.

I'm smart enough to realize being fat isn't a big deal and there is nothing wrong with poking some fun every once in a while....I'd wager good money Weis pokes fun at his weight to....

Seriously how do some of you get through life without a sense of humor....you guys really let the trolls get to you way to much

My sense of humor is perfectly fine, thank you. I just prefer to laugh at jokes, that, you know, require a little more intelligence to come up with AND that haven't already been made ad naseum by countless other people.

And you continue to defend it. You must've really thought that was a good line, huh?

I don't think anything of the line....I'm just shocked some of you do....

Seriously, that same line would be used to talk about Stewart (the 0-lineman) and no one would bat an eye....

But as the board wants to "clean up"....if you get back to actually talking football and not crying about a fat joke....let me know...I'll return to the thread...

If you wish to continue crying about a joke...private me, we can discuss it there for hours if you wish

Good riddance! :boohoo:
