I know this is already a thread, I just want to see a yes or no visual on what everybody thinks. I say he's gone. I'm going simply on the fact that the D has digressed from last year.

I voted no and would have voted no for a while now. I just don't get the logic behind the defensive schemes he lays out and, frankly, don't know how he ended up at ND again in the first place beyond possibly a Holtz/ND connection kind of thing and his two years of glory in the 90s.

If I wanted a guy on my staff who taught to leave spaces wide enough for Ford trucks to drive through...I'd have called Ford.

Thank you.

Weis is too much of a puss to fire him........and it will set back the progression of ND like no one will believe. It starts this weekend when ND loses Donald, Edwards and ultimately Blackwell. BOOOOOOM.

I think if he were going to be fired it'd of happened by now. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. They'd need to leave time to hire someone new to replace him. And I doubt they'd wait until after signing day, that'd look really bad to do it after the kids have already declared.

I think Weis will give him an ultimatum this year. Produce or hit the road. I don't see Weis pulling the trigger when he knows that we've been outmatched. I also think it would be hypocritical for Weis to fire Minter at this point.

We scored:

14 vs LSU
14 vs GT
20 vs UCLA
21 vs Mich
24 vs USC

So it's not like his offenses have been producing against the tough opponents either. He has failed nearly as badly on the offensive side of the football in big games as Minter has on the defensive side. Of course, Minters defenses are giving up points to everyone, while Weis has had success offensively against average to weak opponents.

Correct. The question isn't "do we want Minter here" but WILL he be here. I don't think there's any realistic shot at him being fired now. If it was gonna happen, it would have happened already. Whether he can pull his act together and get the defense to perform better with younger guys, we'll just have to see.

Do you really think we are going to loose out on those guys?? I thought Donald was a lock since he didn't want to announce in Tennessee

I would love to see minter hit the road, but I voted yes since I doubt he will be gone.

Yes. Think of the lack of size/depth that we had on defense this year. He'll have two years to prove himself. If the defense doesnt make significant improvements by 2008, then he's gone. Otherwise, he's here to stay, so get used to him.

Yep. Were stuck with his stupid ass for at least 2 more PATHETICALLY BAD defensive years. I hate him. I hated him with Lou I hate him EVEN more now. He needs to go.

I think he'll be here for next year, but under a "step up or ship out" leash.

Really, being able to shut down teams like Stanford should be given, I want to see some kind of progress made against the USCs and Michigans of the schedule.

The pastings by most top 10 teams is one thing. Giving up 400+ yards to teams like Air Force is another. The "bend but not break" broke too often, regardless of talent on the field.

I agree Minter doesn't have a clue how to recruit nor coach a game. I'm fed up with the guy. We need change.

Giving up 400 yards to Air Force is horrid.

That's what I mean by a short leash. He should be given one more year, with immediate improvement needed to spare his job.

Hey, the only reason I say that is because if he stinks out loud, and the Browns stink again, maybe the Browns can get Romeo Crennell to come be the D-Coordinator here with his old buddy Charlie

Being a Browns fan in NE Ohio, I can attest that I would GLADLY give Romeo Crennel away, even to the Irish.

Good point, but the offense doesn't play in a vacuum. When your defense gives up a score, the other team gets to kick off, and your offense starts at their own 20. And if your defense lets the other team get to mid-field before stopping them, they punt, and your offense starts INSIDE their own 20.

It's hard to score touchdowns when every touchdown drive has to go 80+ yards.

We need a better defense that can force some 3-and-outs and give our offense some shorter fields to work with. "Bend But Don't Break" doesn't do that.

Of course, the opposite is true too... when your offense can't move the ball or, even worse, turns the ball over a lot, your defense is stuck having to defend a shorter field. The Michigan game was a great example of that.

But looking back at the past year, I have to say our defense has looked much more problematic than our offense.

I meant no offense, ACamp. I just don't get the feeling Romeo's got it all together as a head coach in the NFL...yet. If he were a head coach in college (ala Charlie), perhaps that could work. It just seems to me he loads up on defensive players in the draft (for obvious reasons) and neglects to take responsibility for being able to call or influence the offensive side of the ball due to lack of experience.

Unfortunately, you are correct on losing 2 out of 3. I sure hope we get Blackwell and Smith.

I do believe that the LSU loss killed our recruiting. I would hope that Weis would have made calls to the defensive recruits and said "You see by our play in the Sugar Bowl,we need you defensive guys NOW"!

It sure doesn't look that way.
