David Carr did it in 2002. Carson Palmer followed suit the next year. Now Brady Quinn is ready to join the list of quarterbacks who have parlayed an appearance in the Senior Bowl into the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Quinn, Notre Dame's record-setting quarterback who finished third in the recent Heisman Trophy balloting, has officially accepted an invitation to play in the Under Armour Senior Bowl on Jan. 27 at Ladd-Pebbles Stadium.
"We've had a great run of quarterbacks in the draft, particularly with those guys going No. 1 overall," said Vic Knight, Senior Bowl media relations director.
"Since Carr and Palmer went No. 1, we've had Philip Rivers in 2004, Jason Campbell in 2005 and Jay Cutler last year. I think all of these quarterbacks realize what a great chance this is to be in this environment and be around and work with NFL coaching staffs."
Draft expert Mel Kiper currently has Quinn as the No. 1 overall player on his draft board. That board does not include any juniors who might decide to enter the draft a year early.
Quinn led Notre Dame to a 10-2 record this season and back-to-back BCS bowl appearances. Most impressive among his statistics -- which include 3,278 yards passing as a senior -- is his touchdown-to-interception ratio of 7-to-1. In 12 games this season, Quinn has thrown 35 touchdown passes and only five interceptions.
When Quinn gets to Mobile next month, he will have the advantage of throwing to his two favorite college receivers. In all, five Notre Dame players have accepted invitations to the Senior Bowl.
Quinn will be joined by wide receivers Jeff Samardzija and Rhema McKnight, offensive lineman Ryan Harris and defensive end Victor Abiamiri.
"We are excited to have the University of Notre Dame so well represented in this year's Senior Bowl," said Senior Bowl President Steve Hale. "The tremendous success enjoyed by Notre Dame is a credit to these five outstanding seniors and we're looking forward to showcasing their talents throughout Senior Bowl Week 2007."
Samardzija is one of the most interesting prospects in this year's senior class. The 6-foot-5, 217-pounder is the top-rated wide receiver and No. 10 overall prospect on Kiper's draft list, but he has some professional options. Samardzija played in the Chicago Cubs minor league farm system last summer. He holds the Notre Dame record for career receptions with 171, career touchdown catches with 26 and receiving yards with 2,534.
McKnight, 6-1, caught 64 passes for 885 yards and tied Samardzija's school record with 15 touchdowns in 2006, which ranked second in the nation this season. He currently ranks second in school history with 22 scoring catches and is fifth in career yards with 2,255.
Abiamiri led the Irish in 2006 with 10 quarterback sacks and also had 14.5 tackles for loss.
Harris was a Walter Camp All-American selection in 2005 and has started 34 consecutive games for the Irish at left tackle.

It's great to see these guys getting accolades that are well deserved...especially guys like Ryan Harris who, as an OL guy, rarely get honors.

I suspect Brady's future agent will try to talk him out of playing in this game. To no avail.

I suspect Brady's future agent will try to talk him out of playing in this game. To no avail.

I can imagine the phone call:

Brady's Future Agent calling Quinn's parent's house:
Quinn's mom: "Hello?"
BFA: "Hi Mrs Quinn, is Brady around?"
Quinn's mom: "No, he is out with some friends. Anything I can help you with?"
BFA: "Well, I was hoping I could convince Brady not to play in the Senior Bowl. I would hate to see him get hurt."
Quinn's mom: "He's going out there no doubt. If he doesn't I won't be driving him to any more games. Good bye!"

;)

[remember that his mom threatened to stop going to his baseball games if he did not give it his all]

Could it be?
Brady's future agent is Mom?

There have been weirder things.

However, with no experience I wouldn't expect it.

If that was her goal, she could easily hire an agent, use him as a template and learn from him, then covnince Quinn fire him down the line.

Of course, she could become similar to William Wesley. She will have connections to 2 guaranteed first round picks, AJ Hawk and Quinn, and connections to other possible ones from the ND program and future ones.

LOL...I definitely don't see it happening. The Quinn's spent a lot of time choosing an agent for Brady. Brady should make the final call once the season is over.

OMFG, he's not going to get hurt in the Senior Bowl.

The only thing it will do; is help his draft status.

I'm not trying to be negative but the first is a possibilty and the second is an improbability.
He's got nowhere to go among eligible quarterbacks but down.
A good agent will make him aware of both.
But he'll probably play anyway just because he wants to.

The way the Senior Bowl is structured, it would be pretty difficult for any QB to get injured. That game just doesn't get played quite as hard.

On top of that, just look at Quinn's career, especially the non-stop smackdown that was his first two years. If THAT didn't leave him injured, the Senior Bowl certainly won't injure him either.

Quinn'll be fine. I'm not worried at all.

Of course, first he has to survive the Sugar Bowl, and you all know my pessimism on THAT game. But I digress. ;)

players go there to show their goods in the practices anyway. Who is coaching their squad? As far as Brady himself, he can only impress the coaches scouts during the week. It's not like he's going to go down there and display a lack of ability to pick up whatever they want him to run. And even if he throws 2 picks, it won't matter. He's played against great talent already.

OT, I always like when our guys don't litter their helmets with other team's stickers. Not to be elitist but it helps me locate them and helmets covered in "V's" from Fresno and other letters and @#$% looks like crap.
