Tough call between the ?able clip on the Rocket's KO return 4 TD & the BC kick. I can still hear Bill Walsh announcing that game and saying that there's no way in hell that Colorado should kick to the Rocket. It was surreal to watch him field the kickoff & take it the distance after Walsh's warning. And the clip call was one of those that if not pointed out would have never been complained about but since it was called (on the other side of the field away from the play, if I recall) it was rationalized by the media that it was the right call.

The only thing I have trouble remembering is the year. Was it the bowl after the 1989 season or the 1990 season? I thought that ND beat the Buffs after the '89 season & lost to 'em after the '90 season. Reason I think it's 1989 was b/c it was a similar year to '93, in that it's hard to argue that ND didn't deserve, AT LEAST, a share of the NC in one of those years. They totally contradict each other. In '89, ND loses to Miami yet beats #1 Colorado in the bowl, but Miami gets the NC (Miami won head-to-head after all). Then in '93 the same thing happens but this time ND wins the head-to-head and still no share? Ahh...memories.

Last year, 4th and 9 against USC. I went from dangerously high hopes to dangerously low dread in about 6.4 seconds.

We had 'em at 4th and 9. WE HAD 'EM AT 4TH AND 9!!! RRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!

THIS ONE IS EASY AND YOU ALL ARE MISSING IT...

It was a Davie year. USC lines up around the 10 yard line. The Irish Defense does not even get ready. Palmer looks around and calls hike. USC scores a TD before the Irish D even moves.

It did not affect some big season.
It was not controversial.
But it WAS the worst play EVER.

I thought that was UT and Casey Clausen. Did it happen twice?

Nah, coulda been UT.

I just remember the play. I remember thinking: wow, that was amateur hour for the Irish.

It was like a Junior High Team getting burned...

I just rememvber Casey Clausen playing in the stadium and the tv guys talking about how he wanted to go to ND, but the staff at ND told him that he wasn't ND material. And he went on to destroy ND

Ill have to agree, but it wasnt really our fault, we have perfect coverage on the reciever for that play.... the throw was just on the money.

Let's throw in the Willingham High Schoolish, never ran a single 2 point conversion from it "Swinging Gate" extra point in there too.

Not a single awful play, just plain stupidity.

Just a quick question. Who was the defensive coordinator for that 93 BC loss?

Horrible memories. I agree with 4th and 9, the clip, 3rd and 47, I think the BC field goal might have hurt the most.
others:
Derek Brown dropping a pass in the endzone last play of the game vs Stanford in 1990.
Penn St. in 1990 kicking a FG to win, Irish blew that game.

that is the worst for me...that's when i said Davie needs to go NOW!

I would agree that was yet another indicator that Davie had to go. I can almost justify respect for Michigan and USC, but I can't stand MSU and BC. I think the reason ND fans cannot stand those schools is because they are perennial average programs that we should dominate, and have struggled against in recent years.

We respect USC and UM to a degree because they have been where we want to be in the last 10-15 years (i.e.-raising that crystal football).

It was USC 2001. I was there. But hey, we still beat them... the last time we beat USC.

And BC 1993 is my second concrete memory of Notre Dame football. I remember my mom screaming and pounding the floor. My first memory was from FSU when Wooden batted down the past.

So I don't remember that enough, so I'm going to have to go with either the 4th and 9 or the Bush Push.

Or when BC scored that last TD against us in 2004. I was sure we finally had them beat. Then they converted a 4th and something. Then they slipped that TD pass in. I almost broke the TV.

BC in 93 was a ranked team, weren't they? something like 18-19??

I'm almost positive they were unranked when they played us. Them beating us put them in the rankings. I'll have to do some digging on this one.

It has been argued that the 1993 BC game was the beginning of the downward spiral of ND Football.

I don't remember the BC game very much, I guess I was too young...

4 down with 9 yards to go, only to see Jarrett bust it for 50+ yards knocked the wind out of me...by far my worst memory.

If it was the beginning of the downward spiral could it not be because Bob Davie became the D-cordinator the next year??

Montana's senior game vs. USC in the Coliseum in 1978. He leads the Irish to one of his vaunted comebacks, gets the Irish ahead, 25-24. But not even God can save ND when a Southern Cali screwjob is brewing at the Colisuem.

Trojans are driving, QB is sacked, he puts the ball on the ground. I believe ND's Jeff Westin fell on the ball, which was a fumble, even replays showed it was a fumble and the QB's arm -- I believe Sean Salisbury was the QB -- was not coming forward. ND wins and is headed toward a major ball on Jan.1.

But wait, another Southern Cal screw job in the Coliseum. Refs rule incomplete pass. SC trots out of the FG team and kicker boots one on final play. SC 27, ND 25.

Irish end up laying a beating on Penn State in the Gator Bowl, instead of playing on Jan 1.

To this day I hate USC, the song girls, the horse, the stadium and I damn near vomit when ever I see that egotistical Salisbury on ESPN.

Yes, almost 30 years later I am still scarred by that play.

I know of the game your talking about, I wasn't alive then. The QB wasn't Salisbury, it was some lefty, who I think does the SC games on the radio now. Montana's last game was in the Cotton Bowl, Gator Bowl was 1976. Good post though, I've seen highlights of that, it was total bullshit, maybe worse then last years SC game.
