So... one more game left in the season. I thought we could all do our own little scouts/rivals evaluation of the players on Off/Def this year. Knowing how they performed COMPARED TO OTHERS AROUND THE NATION in the same position.... what star ranking would you give them (1-5 just like rivals, for example)?

Here is the list of offensive starters:

RT: Sam Young **
RG: Bob Morton **
C: John Sullivan **
LG: Dan Santucci **
LT: Ryan Harris ***

TE: John Carlson *****
WR: Rhema McKnight ****
WR: Jeff Samardzija *****
WR: David Grimes ***

QB: Brady Quinn *****
RB: Darius Walker ***
FB: Ashley McConnell **

----------------------------------

Here is the list of defensive starters:

DE: Victor Abiamiri ***
DT: Trevor Laws ***
DT: Derek Landri ****
DE: Chris Frome **

WLB: Travis Thomas **
MLB: Maurice Crum **
SLB: Joe Brockington **

CB: Terrail Lambert ***
SS: Tom Zbikowski ***
FS: Chinedum N'Dukwe **
CB: Mike Richardson ***

-----------------------------------------

Other players with limited time:

RB: James Aldridge ***
TE: Marcus Freeman ***
DE: Justin Brown **
DE: Ronald Talley **
SLB: Anthony Vernaglia **
CB: Ambrose Wooden **
CB: Darrin Walls **
SS: Ray Herring **
FS: David Bruton **

There you have it... let's see your star rankings

I'm not going to take the time to rate every player but I think Ryan Harris should have at least a 4 star also Sam young atleast a 3

i think you nailed it.

One exception, I would give Duke a much higher rating, he finished 2nd in tackles and T1 in Pass break ups. Frome also might deserve a 5 star but I'm cool with 4.

i think Abiamiri should be higher he delt with alot of double teams and still had a good year with a solid number of sacks and a good amount of QB hurries and presure

Harris was like a 3.5 star to me... i couldn't quite give him 4 b/c there are so many talented O Linemen out there, and when I think of the total ratio of 4* players from rivals, i didn't think that Harris fit in that upper tier. Anytime an offensive line gives up over 30 sacks, it's hard to bolster someone to be among the elite.

Sam Young was about on par with the other linemen that I gave 2*'s to. He certainly didn't OUTPERFORM them. For a freshman, Sam Young was amazing. In the gran scheme of all that is college football... comparing him against the starters of the other 119 D1 programs, I couldn't give him a 3* rating.

And, I know that Duke was 2nd in the team in tackling.... that was aided mainly by the USAFA (or Navy... i forget now) game where he recorded 22 tackles. And yeah, he was tied with Richardson for pass breakups... but he missed too many tackles and took too many bad angles which resulted in big plays. =/ I could understand your argument of bumping him to a 3*, but i dont think i can do it =P

abiamiri compiled 70% of his sacks against Stanford, Army, and Navy. He was absolutely non-existent in our big games. 4* players make some sort of impact in a big game. double-teamed or not, he had very low production.

Talley was on course for a 2* year. I based him on that.

Not bad IMO. I would change a few ...
Maurice Crum I would rate 3*
Chinedum N'Dukwe rates a 3*
Sam Young rates a 3*
Marcus Freeman rates a 2*
Zibby I'm torn between a 2 & 3*

his yards were compiled in garbage time... i admit. i honestly believe if he saw more time, he would've had nearly as good of rushing production as walker. obviously, it is all speculation, but from what I saw, I would rate him on par with the national average running back. Walker is more of a higher 3 (for versatility in the passing game).... Aldridge a lower 3. Remember... 3* is a broad range of players. Just like Zibby was a low 3, Crum was a high 2 (could've been a 3 if he could shed blocks)

Freeman was a 3* b/c of his solid blocking... he also made some nice catches.

I couldn't bring myself to rate Sam Young higher than Sully or Santucci... call it guilty by association.... 30+ sacks is a glaring number

Here is the list of offensive starters:

RT: Sam Young 3 never dominated a game, limited errors after first couple games. Potential is there, but not grading on potential.
RG: Bob Morton 3 Not consistent enough.
C: John Sullivan 4 Solid all year but not phenomenal
LG: Dan Santucci 3/4 Didn't notice him during games...thats good and bad
LT: Ryan Harris 4 most consistent but got beat too much by small, quick DE's

TE: John Carlson 4-TE's never get 5's in scout/rivals rankings
WR: Rhema McKnight 4 top 10 WR in the nation, likely top 5
WR: Jeff Samardzija 5 talent, production, and the game winner vs UCLA
WR: David Grimes 3 just not enough catches or YAC to be a 4 star

QB: Brady Quinn 5 best player in college football, almost never makes a dumb pass
RB: Darius Walker 4 disappointed in his blocking more than anything, lapses late in year, but catching ability makes up for it. Lacks burst and top end speed. Doesnt fumble.
FB: Ashley McConnell 3 wasnt used often, limited only to blocking, not great there

----------------------------------

Here is the list of defensive starters:

DE: Victor Abiamiri 5 good numbers against poor teams. would have been better if ND had a pass rush from other DE position, or refs called holding, but talent is there
DT: Trevor Laws 4 Really controlled inside and got a good pass rush. Great stamina
DT: Derek Landri 4 Great pass rush and held own against run. Great Stamina.
DE: Chris Frome 2/3 no pass rush whatsoever, pretty solid against the run

WLB: Travis Thomas 2/3 not a great tackler, weak against run. OK is pass coverage.
MLB: Maurice Crum 4 usually in the right spot, good tackler, blitzed well.
SLB: Joe Brockington 3 Emerged late in year and had good showing.

CB: Terrail Lambert 3 Take out the Michigan game and he's pretty solid
SS: Tom Zbikowski 3/4 Very good on special teams, seemed to lack intensity this year
FS: Chinedum N'Dukwe 3 Much more fluid this year, still not great speed to ball. tackles well.
CB: Mike Richardson 3 Solid against run and in the slot, lacks ideal speed to be a #1 or 2 corner.

-----------------------------------------

Other players with limited time:

RB: James Aldridge 3 runs hard but doesnt seem very agile. Maybe the knee still bothered him. Horrendous on one pass attempt(i was laughing at it it was so bad).
TE: Marcus Freeman 3 Blocks well but not a good reciever. lacks speed
DE: Justin Brown 3 My favorite DE after Abiamiri, solid in all regards but not great. Wish he had played over Frome.
DE: Ronald Talley 0 Didnt finish the year with his team. Wish him the best of luck. Probably grade him a 2 on his talent, nothing special.
SLB: Anthony Vernaglia 2
CB: Ambrose Wooden 3 played OK to start year, wonder if injury affected him the rest of the way
CB: Darrin Walls 3 Great cover skills, potential is outstanding. Lets hope he can cover like Deion because he tackles like him.
SS: Ray Herring 3 Really liked what I saw in brief glimpses. Looks like a little Zibby. Didnt make huge mistakes when in there.
FS: David Bruton 2 Got hung out to dry a couple times vs. USC when Ndukwe went out. Big body and great straight ahead speed(Special teams) but lacks agaility to turn and run in secondary.

So, basically, IrishSanDiego you just added one star to pretty much every player on the roster? I think we need a clearer definition of what star means. Is it ability impact a pro game? Like the way we rate HS on their ability to impact college? Or is it if they were HS players they would be rated this way. I think the original ranking fits the first definition better, and the second fits the second. But the first definately makes more sense to do. SanDiego gave no starter a 2* which would be fine if they were in HS, but we have a lot of 2*'s if you compare it to the NFL.

i really don't see how you can rate Aldridge almost as high as Walker. Aldridge didn't do too much to impress me. Sure he had some decent carries in junk time, but he really didn't do to much to warrant a 3. I give him a 2 at most. He has potential, but he looked like just another freshman to me.

I recall Walker losing fumbles against UCLA and USC this year.
That's two too many for what he normally gave in his first two years.
Did he have any others?
