Makes more sens than Mike Leach bringing his gimmick offense to Coral Gables.

Keeping Shannon definitely increases their chances of hanging on to a lot of their commits.

Mike Leach may run a gimmick offense now, but he didn't while he was the playcaller at OU.

Randy Shannon is a very good hire for Miami....BUT....what confuses me is the fired Coker for among other things, the lack of control dispalyed by his teams. Remind me if I am wrong, which side of the ball took place in the brawl at the start of it? I am not blaming Shannon, but if you say you need a new image and want to clean up the program, usually you go outside of the program.

Miami felt pressure to name someone, and did not want to wait (especially after Alabama got Rodriguez locked down last night).

I do not think Shannon will fail, he will do well, but Miami talking out of both sides of their mouths again!

That is a good point seems to me if you wanted to clean up the program you would look from outside the program to hire the head coach

What!?!?! No Kosar?!?!?!?!?!

No shot.

That would be worse than hiring Ty Willingham, at least Ty had coaching experience, albeit only as a position and head coach.

Kosar has never coached before.

Shannon might very well turn things around, but it looks to me like they just wanted to blame Coker for losing and are ignoring the problems the program & school had as a whole. I doubt part of Randy Shannon's deal was a guarantee of facility upgrades. Interested to see what Randy does about the offensive side of the ball. The image of the university was not improved with this hire. Most people will think, "well, more of the same".

I posted on the Coker being fired thread that Duh U's new hire would wind up being unspectacular.

I wonder how many coaches were interested in the position....not going to attract many high profile guys with the state/image they are in.

I think it's not a bad hire at all for them. Sure, they would have preferred a big name coach, but I think Shannon can get the job done in South Florida.

It really shouldn't take much to make that program good again. They have so many good athletes and the D is always solid. Maybe hire a good O-coordinator and get a real QB? Idk...

Yes, I am going to go there. It is a spectacular hire in the eyes of many...the hired a MINORITY! Since Ty will be fired this will be at least cross out his elimination in the coaching ranks..(and I predict he will wind up as the defensive backs coach wherever Dennis Green winds up.)

OK, in all honesty though, he will recruit well (he always has) he is an alum so all the former players will stay a part of the program.

I agree he will be a good hire....I just think from the outsider looking in it would have been better to hire from outside of the current coaching staff.

Promoting an only fairly known DC to Head Coach is not on the spectacular meter even close to Butch Davis or Rich Rodriguez. Closer to Tom O'Brien, but not even that high. He may be a good hire for their situation, but no one is saying "Wow! Did you hear Miami got Randy Shannon?"

hmoney, In my first post on this thread I was the one who questioned why they did not go outside the program. If they say they want to clean it up, that is what you would naturally do. I agree 100%, I should not say that I am shocked at the hire though.

The Thug image will continue to follow the program hiring someone within the program doesn't seem to help that image in my opinion....I think a lot of it has to do with the type of player they recruit doesn't appear that Shannon could reign them in as D coordinator what is to say he can controld them as a Head coach
