Looking to buy a new PC from Dell?

Ummm...the same speed Intel will cost you less right now. If you compare $ for $, the same $ will get you more speed with Intel.

Just go check the performance tests at Tom's Hardware, then check prices...it's pretty amazing...and it will only last until late spring or early summer.

I don't know yet, just recieved this email from my Dell rep yesterday,

Hey Guys!
As you all probably know now, Dell has recently integrated AMD processors into several of our OptiPlex systems. I know that at this point the majority of you are comfortable and pleased with the performance of your Intel procs, but I wanted to give you an opportunity to try out the AMD and see if you like it!

Dell has permitted me to GIVE a good number of the systems to my clients to see if you are pleased with the results. I would love to ship each of you a new OptiPlex 740 with the AMD processor in it to keep, just let me know if you are interested. It will give you a good opportunity to play around with the systems without any liability to you if you do not like it! There is a nomination process (which I handle internally) and after that is complete, your new system is on it's way!

AMD processors are a good solution to clients who need a cost efficient yet powerful system…(sounds like my government accounts!) I can generally save between 15-20% on your standard configurations using the AMD processor. If you would like more information on our AMD processors and the new OptiPlex 740 check out the below links!

Let me know who's interested! (I assure you, there are no strings attached!) Help me get rid of these free systems!

I'm not sure about the rest of the world, just for me at Dell right now an AMD system is cheaper. For the standard Apps we use a terminal emulator, MSOffice and a handful of web apps we really don't need much. I'll get my "free" test unit, build an image and send it out in production and go from there.

I did go look at Toms and thanks for the tip. You're right, AMD is getting killed by Intel right now. The performance isn't a huge difference, but the prices are. Never thought I would see that. I'll see what my price comes in at.

Intel > AMD for at least the nest 2 years.

AMD fell asleep with the 90nm die process will Intel kept shrinking their dies which allows for putting more cores in a single cpu. Even with the new "Quad-Core" CPU's coming, Intel's Kentsfield Quad-Core is going to own AMD's 4x4 and do it with lesser power consumption.

9 months...tops.

Trust me.

How? Their new K8L architecture will help, but just as they finally get to the 60nm die process that Intel has been at for a year now, Intel will be dropping down to 45nm and looking to have 8 cores on a single die with 2x6 meg caches.

I'm not trying to flame, I just don't get it...what is your basis for this?

At least I know who to go look for when I'm I need CPU info. Thanks for the processor training. Just send me an invoice and we'll cut you a check.

Well, my knowledge is only good through the summer of next year, after that I am at the beck and call of the websites like Tom's.

You are right that Intel is going 45nm...the process is in the finishing stages (I have friends literally working the machines). However, just because Intel goes to 45nm does not mean that they will be inherently faster because of it.

AMD's K8L is suspected to be a big jump. Intel expects to lose the speed lead in Q2'07...not to regain the crown for a few years (yes, 2010). They may have a jump up or two, but AMD is about to come roaring back.

How do I know? I worked at Intel for a decade. I was one of those whacked in the recent layoff.

Intel is a great company, an excellent place to work for, and they are an amazing manufacturer. However, as they have proven in the past few years they are not infallible. They are about to prove it again. ;)

I would have thought 8 cores > 4 cores, no matter the architecture...

Have you gotten to play with K8L first hand?

8 cores will be somewhat better, but cmon who buys that stuff? I am talking the normal person. The everyday user.

I have not played with a K8L...but I have seen some pre-tests.

My computer is older than dirt (2 years old):
Dell XPS Gen4
P4 3.4GHz
1GB RAM
Radeon x800XT 256MB
250GB Western Digital HDD
SB Audigy2

I am a big CounterStrike and Half-Life player... I started a Half-Life clan 5 years ago...still around too.

That defines nerd I think. ;)

That being said, I have an E6600 sitting in a box at my feet. I bought it just before I left my former employer.

The gaming pc that I'd built before this new one was almost a carbon copy of what yours is...sold it to help buy the parts for the new one i listed above.

I'm a big UT2k4 player, and a clanner myself.

It has to be a "Kentsfield" to be a quad-core...there are 2 dual core extreme editions that are not quads...just an FYI
