100 yards less through the air in 2006 than 2004. Discussion closed.

exactly, and Ty had better players in the depth chart then... let's get off the guy until he gets some speed, then....

of course it would be nice if he could get it through our DB's head that once the WR catches the ball and makes a move you no longer try to break the play up... you simply wrap up and make a tackle but still... the depth just isn't there and who's fault is that really?

It often looked like the team was in the right defense, but Jarret in particular just outmatched anyone we had on him, with the exception of the interception.

What killed us, IMO, was the tight end on 3d down. Two or three times we had a chance to force a punt, and they found the tight end.

Ah, so we've already decided that Minter is NOT the problem, and is doing a good job, because his defense surrendered 100 fewer passing yards on the season than a team that was bad enough to GET A HEAD COACH FIRED.

You people are nuts.

Agree with the 2nd part of the statement (about tackling guys after the catch); most of the big plays this year (and Jarrett's big 4th down conversion last year) would have been 10-15yds if guys weren't missing tackles or slipping/colliding after the catch.

Not sure about the speed side of things; Lambert has alot of speed as does Wooden.

The depth problem goes back to previous eras (unfortunately there aren't many top recruits out on the golf course. I really admired Willingham from an integrity standpoint, but he was a huge liability as a recruiter); I presume that you were suggesting the same thing?

Just a bunch of excuses. Win the damn game

I don't see them being excuses.....

ND is not as good as the following teams (talent wise):

OSU
Michigan
USC

That is a statement, not an excuse.

The reason that they are not as good is due to a talent gap (opinion, not an excuse). The reason for the talent gap is previous weak recruiting (opinion, not an excuse), which is backed up very well by Svo's summary of the last several year's recruiting classes.

An 'excuse' would be that ND lost because the grass was too short, or that the refs missed a procedure call on Jarrett's 3rd TD. The reality is: ND lost because they are not as good; if they were to play 10 times, I would venture that ND might win 2, lose 4 by 7 or less, lose 2 by 7-14, and lose 2 by more than 2 TDs.

yes, my point was everyone wants to throw Rick under the bus... is it really his fault? Or can this be considered Ty fallout? it's a valid question IMO

Agreed: could Minter have done more? Probably yeah...

However, the offensive side of the ball had several issues this season, and last night:

-dropped balls (Rema McKnights stock probably has fallen due to last night), pressure on Quinn, fumbles, etc

For anyone to say that firing Minter is going to fix this problem....you don't realize the size of the problem that needed to be fixed. It may turn out that Minter is not effective, but it is hard to tell given the individual performances by defensive players: missed tackles, running into each other, blown coverages.

One thing that is beyond dispute: our playmakers did not make plays.

Quinn did not capitalize on the last play of the very first drive. On that third down option, he had a first down had he kept the ball. He led Smardge out of the endzone when he was open late in the game.
Rhema dropped a couple of balls that would have extended drives.
Smardge got pushed all over the field.
Harris was called for 3 off-sides and Young for 1.
No sacks for our defensive linemen.
No big plays for Travis Thomas.
Zib got beat one on one on a crucial 4th down play and was later called for pass interference. No punt returns or kickoff returns for more than 20 yards. No picks. In fact, no breakups.
Darius fumbled at the opponents 5 yard line.

Actually, we still could have won that game had we converted on just two more series (then the onsides kick would have been unnecessary). But playmakers have to make plays, and, for whatever reason, that happened last year against Michigan and USC but not this year.

nothing man, I was referring to the lack of talent and how it is hurting people's view of Minter

I can't wait til we can finally drop that man's name from all discussion regarding this program (Ty that is). He's like a fungus that refuses to go away.
