Just like there's no class in your posts.

He walked on. He beat out a scholarship kicker. NOBODY beat him out. And how can he be the worst kicker in college when he beat out 3 other guys on YOUR team?

And he made a TD saving tackle tonight.

it's Okay sir... just take a deep breath...

Carl Gioa or however you spell that losers name.

Ugh. Good riddance.

As much as I'd like to call you an idiot for making such a statement, I cant friend. Im guilty as hell when the whiskey gets to coursing through my veins. Though I try not to post, until my head clears the next day. If most of you were here last night, I'd probably still be tied to the coffee table with a sock stuffed in my mouth. Between Rhema's dropped balls, defensive missed tackles and Gioa's half-ass on side kick, Im pretty sure I was guilty myself, only difference is, I didn't do it for everyone to read. I agree his kicking sucks, but I wouldn't call him a loser, and as far as him being gone, who's gonna replace him that's any better ? Many names come to mind when Im pissed at a player, but never "loser", afterall, he's attending the University of Notre Dame !

I'm from the region and had to witness his famous kick against Penn in the Regional final in 2002 the first time a region team had beaten Penn in history I think... Well anyways

Where is Crennel, Mickey Andrews, Randy Shannon??? Thats who I am not going to miss the most... He'll leave Mike Richardson one on one with Jarret and have a safety blitz and have Zib covering the whole field... Of course we are going to get picked apart... Not only is the defense terrible the gameplanning is too... If Weis wants a co-head coach those are the only names that are available possibly that I would take... Minter needs to go... Along with some other defensive staff members (Lewis)... THEY ARE AFFECTING RECRUITING... AND GAMES... I don't care what anyone says that is the truth... Willingham also had help in recruiting a terrible defense... Time for Charlie to search along the way back from So Cal... Weis needs a coach who can one recruit athletic defense guys to ND, and a coach who doesn't need any help when it comes to the defense, Charlie controls the offense and you control the defense... Maybe Charlie can focus on game planning a whole lot more than having to worry about the defense...

And we will have the kicker we want in 08 when that Vinateri clone Ben Buchanan on campus..

Gioia sucks, and there's nothing wrong with saying so. I dunno who's "stood by him all year" but I certainly haven't. The guy is horrible. He's been horrible since he was so awful last year that when DJ got hurt, Weis kept sending him out there hurt and ineffective, because Gioia was so bad that a hurt and ineffective DJ was better than him. THAT is a bad kicker. He really hurt this team. "We weren't playing a field goal game anyway." Oh yea? Then why did we kick a field goal down 14-0? Considering we were at various times down 11 with the ball, I'd say that having a capable field goal kicker, who would have allowed us to maybe KICK THE 40 yard FIELD GOAL rather than go for it on 4th and 9 like a Tecmo Bowl team, would have been a help. The team probably plays differently if it's within a TD. Who knows? But we never got a chance because Gioia can't kick.

Now, is it rude to criticize him? No. He sucks. It's fair to criticize him. When he's getting 3 extra points blocked in a game, and is so bad that Weis has to go for it on 4th and 9 rather than try a 40 yard kick, then yea he's open to criticism.

Also, was he eventually put on scholarship? Because if so I certainly don't feel bad about ripping him a new one. Imagine getting free tuition to be a horrible kicker.

Understand the sentiment around the kicking game, and agree that it changes the teams philosphy in that 20-30yd zone. However, I agree with the views that it is myopic to say that Giola leaving will be for the better. If CW thought that he was the best of his 3 kickers, then next year will not be pleasant (and there is no kicker on the horizon in this year's recruiting class).

I'd be more disappointed in Burkhart who was given a scholarship last year, was a 2* kicker as I recall (that would be like a 4* position player), and did not earn the FG role. Giola walked-on, and earned his spot - not his 'fault' that he is the best that we have.

No matter what you may think about Gioia, you just know that the kicking game has driven Charlie crazy this year. He got spoiled having Viniatieri all those years and it must be tough to try to work with an unreliable kicker. Plus, we all saw how Parcells reacted to Vanderjagt's suspect kicking. Tuna looked like his head was going to explode after some of those misses. I have a feeling that Charlie was close to losing it at times too.

Rather than drunken playground talk, let's look at fact.

Field Goals: 8/12, Long of 40 yards
20-29 yards: 3-3
30-39: 4-5
40-49: 1/4
50-59: None

* The main problem is that 40-49 number. Most college kickers aren't able to consistently hit anything over 50 yards, so I'm ignoring that number. A kid who can be consistent in that 40-49 yard range would be a major factor to an offense.

PATS: 47/52

*This could be considered a problem. That just won't do. In 100 PAT attempts, maybe you miss one or two, but to miss 5 out of 52? Not good.

If Goia is the best they have, so be it. He obviously was because no one else attempted a field goal all season.

How certain is everyone that this Buchanan kid is coming to ND? Is this a done deal? His name seems to come up every time kicking is being mentioned in a thread.

Ugh...just let it go homers.
It's not being a homer defending a student at Notre Dame from being called a loser by some random guy on the internet.

But, if that does make me a homer.....then a homer I am.

Field goals or not, he'll graduate from The University of Notre Dame.

Now if that makes him a loser, I need to re-examine my perception of that word.

He's a friggin kicker. They're the Ginger Children of football teams. He'll get his degree and never play football again. He can always say he wore the gold helmet. That's more than any of us can ever say.

You say that as if it is an insult. I understand your "ugh" though. I can't believe any of these people on a Notre Dame website would be upset with you for calling a kid you don't even know who will graduate from Notre Dame a "loser".

P.S. When Clotho is supporting you, you know you're in trouble.

great comebact jersey, love that last jab.

I would like to see anyone on this board get out there in the same circumstances as this kid and kick a field goal from 40 yards out and see how you do, shit even 30. not as easy as it looks. True that is what he was given a scholarship for, but to resort to calling him a loser is flat out stupid. Like others have said, he got to wear the blue and gold and he'll have a degree from ND. Far from being a loser in my book.

I hate to take "shots" at guys, but sometimes when the players are being out and out disrespected and not merely criticized, I get upset.

its not beneath me to take shots at people that consistantly degrade the guys on the team .
its a game these guys have thier whole lives in front of them and they have put them selfs in a spot where they can rise to the top in what ever they do most wont be playing football. for some one to talk shit about them because their favorite team didnt win every game is just bullshit.

I already gave a mea culpa and said most of my comments were said after a tough loss.

If you guys want to keep bringing up the old threads like some deranged necromancer, thats on you, not me.

Fair enough. You can edit your first post, by the way. I don't think anybody would be upset if you questioned the kicking game in general, without calling any one player names.

If that wasn't genuinely funny, I'd be insulted.
