Living in Ann Arbor, I get to watch what may be the best defense in the country. The difference is that they have two rocks (320+?) with plenty of speed in the middle of the line, and every other position is bigger and just as fast as the Irish. ND will get there!

IT WAS AIR FORCE!!!!

Good lord. You people are just like, well you're like Republicans. All teams are not created equal. This was AIR FORCE. And it's not so much the points as the yardage, and the clock domination. Our D could not get off the damn field. Just could not do it. Against a minor league team. It was embarrassing. If we didn't have the few studs we do on offense, we'd have gotten beat today, and badly. And guess what, next year we don't have senior Brady Quinn throwing to seniors Jeff Samardzija and Rhema McKnight. Next year, if this D is not improved (and it will be, I think, with talented freshmen and sophomores, and perhaps a new D coordinator), this team is liable to lose some bad games- like today's. This was a Brady Quinn win. That D played a losing game today.

Did you happen to notice all the other games Air Force played afterwards? If we're basing team quality on one game early in the year, ND sucks, and why are we even discussing them?

The reason why the Air Force offense held the ball for so long was because one of the main points of the option attack (which Air Force does run) is ball control. Also, perhaps the problem with our defense lies in the fact that we have "studs" on our defense. In case you haven't noticed, the best defenses are teams, not a few "studs" surrounded by mediocre players. When you have people trying to do more than their job (Zibby), you're bound to get beat. Also, it was more of a win by the running game than Brady. I'm not saying at all that Brady had a bad game, but we drove the ball on the ground, not through the air, we scored through the air.

I think the USC game will be the measuring stick for this defense. Even if the offense has their best game of the year, Nd won't be able to defeat USC unless their defense (in particular the secondary) does something.

Recruiting is a problem with Nd's defense. I hope you keep Minter there for a long time.

ND defense is what it is: #53 in the nation in total D, 320 yds a game, right behind Vanderbilt and Connecticut, just ahead of East Carolina. That's going into the AF game.

Folks can we please quit talking about how suspect the defense is, it was that way last year, and the year before, and the year before. We are the Colts of college football. Why waste energy on saying our defense is terrible. When you return 9 starters from an average defense your going to get, wait for it....an average defense!!! This is a recruiting problem and until we get more talent and depth in here we are going to have an average defense. You think this year is bad wait til next year, next year won't be because of the lack of talent, but because of the lack of experience. And with us returning exactly what 4 starters on offense next year, ya know what, this is our one chance in probably the next 3 years to root for a national title. so lets quit bitchin about the d and hope everything falls our way to get a chance at great ending to dream season. Enjoy it now why we can.

Considering how long they were on the field, the fact that they were nearly a mile above sea level, I think they did alright. Can we please go a f'n week without somebody calling for Minter's head? For the last f'n time, let's see how he does with some of their own players in the mix. If the D is still not all that good, then CW should start thinking about replacing him, till then, let's knock off the bullshit.

Two of the most athletic defenses in all of college football are Texas and Florida. Today, Texas gave up 350 yards to Kansas State (and 45 points) and Florida gave up 410 yards to South Carolina. Texas lost, and Florida would have if they didn't block multiple kicks.

Is the object of the game to win or give up the fewest yards?

While I agree this is true, I would love to have a defense that was good enough to stop somebody so the offense didn't feel the pressure to score on every drive. With the new clock rules this year possessioins are a premium and if we could get some three and outs against a good team(not AF,Navy,UNC) it just gives us a larger margin of error to work with. If we had a defense last year that was even 25% better then it was I think we would have won the Fiesta Bowl. Hard to win every game in a shoot out.

I just don't see our defense as "terrible." As I mentioned before, "terrible" conjures up visions in my head of giving up 30 to 40 points per game, every week. We're averaging somewhere around 21 points per game. Now, is that a lights-out dominating unstoppable crushing defense? No, not at all. But is that terrible either? No, not at all.

This isn't a binary system, people. It's not 1 for awesome, 0 for terrible. There is a LOT of space between those two extremes... and yet a lot of people on here want to ignore all of that space and just flip the switch to 0.

If you want to provide honest criticism of the D, hey, I'm right there with you. But spare me the hyperbole.

If this kind of performance continues, USC will hang 60 on us. Keep burying your head in the sand.:puke:

Given the ass kicking USC gave the ducks last night...maybe we could put some of the offensive lineman on defense for the USC game. A little ironman football will be in order to beat USC.

People keep talking about how "awful" our D is. But I hear "awful" and I think of giving up 40 to 50 points a game. And yet week after week we're holding our opponents in the teens and 20s.

Now, am I entirely happy with that? No. But to say ND's defense is "awful" is way over the top.

There's "unstoppable," there's "awful," and there's a LOT of space in between. We're somewhere in the middle right now.

There's certainly room for criticism, but please, dial back the rhetoric.
There's a lot of good common sense here. Props Vince.

There it is.
Defense played well yesterday for the most part.
I'll tell you one thing....the falcon offense might have taken some pride in racking up some significant yards last night but rue the fact that they don't pass more today.
I can guarantee you they are some SORE puppys today.
Although we continually gave up 3 and 4 yards per play yesterday (which really isn't that bad, btw) we physically beat the shit out of them.
That poor Chad Hall is going to be seeing Duke in his dreams for the next week.
Busiest man on the Air Force squad this week is the head trainer. OUCH !

That's a pretty arrogant statment considering the company your in Mav. But now really, we havent stopped the bottom feeders on offense for the most part. Unless our defense has a stellar day, which they havent all year, it will be a long day and we'll have to rely on USC making mistakes to win.

I totally agree with you, but having this conversation now is just going to get people frustrated. Some people are not ready to admit it. We will just have to wait and see. Hopefully we catch some breaks from other teams which allow us to continue winning.

Maybe I'm just emotional right now, but I'm getting tired of watching our team on it's heels.

Did I watch a different game? At what point during the 39-17 point blowout was ND "on it's heels"?

It's a good thing they count points toward who wins the game and not yards.

In 9 of ND's 10 games, they have scored more points. Off the top of your head, how many yards did Penn St get? Purdue? UCLA? Now, off the top of your head, who won those games?

Feel free to criticize, but please just don't throw around blind criticism when those pesky little facts are getting in the way.

Yeah man, what's up with these morons who think Notre Dame can actually win a game without the opponents letting them win? Suckers. Just wait until ND gets killed by USC. Then everyone will know how cool all of the naysayers are.

If you don't believe in the team, then why bother watching the games and coming to an ND site where you know true fans believe?

How about you just stop visiting the site so ND fans won't annoy you with their support for the Irish? I am sure the USC board could use a self-loathing traitor like yourself.

I'm also amazed that a so-called Irish fan can believe that ND has no chance against a team that lost to OREGON FREAKING STATE and needed a ref time blunder to beat a Washington team that got blasted by STANFORD!

No OWNZ, you keep burying your head in the USC sand. "Fans" like you make me sick. Not because you think ND could lose, but because you ridicule the people who believe they can win. Go to a USC board and kiss their ass for awhile, just don't come posting here if ND beats them.
