Is anyone worried that JC is two years older than a normal HS senior? (Sorry, but I don't follow recruiting that closely, and I just happened across this fact.)

This is an honest question, I'm not trying to knock him. But I promise you that my HS FB career would have been a lot more stellar if I'd been 19 (by which time I'd gained 20# of muscle) instead of 17.

I wonder how he'll do when he's no longer the only man among boys, so to speak.

He played this season at 18, not 19. Though he will be 19 when he begins at ND. He's basically about 1 1/2 year ahead.

Does it worry me? No. Maybe if he was a lineman, but he's a QB. Throwing the ball is throwing the ball. When I was 18, I couldn't throw a ball any longer or more accurately than when I was 16. A lot of 22 year old college QB's don't have the mechanics, touch or accuracy that he has. You have it or you don't.

The age thing is simply something drummed up by other fans to make themselves feel better. If anything, it helps because he will be more ready when he steps in. And I think those fans would be surprised how many players on their own teams are older than the average classmate. Holding kids back a year is becoming pretty common, especially in big football states.

The other thing they cook up is his QB coach. How exactly is that a negative? So the kid is better prepared than your average HS quarterback. This is bad?

If anything, dis his hair. But the age thing is of no concern to Notre Dame.

meh...the average high school senior is NOT 17. he's 18. clausen JUST turned 19. he'll turn 23 mid-way through his senior year at ND. there's a legitimate chance that he won't redshirt. if that's the case, he'll be the exact same age as a ton of other players out there who sit out their first year and play a 5th year. where's the advantage?

moreover, if you want to know how he'll do when he's no longer a man among boys, there's already proof on the table. he's torched opposing defenses (older than him at the time) for the previous three years, not just this year. this is the first year that he's been older than the average age of his competition.

I turned 19 my second month of college and I never stayed back or anything. Lots of kids graduate at 18. He probably only stayed back 1 year.

Mind you, a lot of kids will repeat 8th grade not for academics, but to gain an extra year of growth before starting their 4 years of HS elegibility/4 years of high school (no 5th year seniors!) : D

Also, I don't know the specifics of the situation, but I've got a friend that's a senior in HS this year and started the year 18 years. He'll turn 19 before he starts college. I've got a friend, also a senior, that started the year at 17. They share the same birthday. It's just one of those things that one parent chose to start the kid a year later in school due to age/maturity. You can either be the youngest or the oldest in your class at that point. Maybe this is something like that?

Yes and no. My son will start kindergarten at six, due to a late birthday that just misses the cutoff date. So by starting at 6, he will not be at a developmental disadvantage vs. 5 year olds who are near the later end of 5. His was probably such a situation.

Besides, I still can't see how being older hurts. Like mentioned above, he tore up seniors as a sophomore. Was he older then?

The line requires more strength and physical maturity. I'm not saying it would be bad for a guy in college, but being two years older than the guys across from you on the line could scew how credible your film is.

He might be mentally tougher for just the simple fact that he is a little older. I don't think it will be a problem at all. His body will be more developed than 17-18 year old kids by about a year. That can be a lot when you are that age. At any rate he is the best qb in the country. Better than Ryan Mallet there Maison. lol

you might be picking a fight there...UM got exactly the type of quarterback they were looking for in mallett. they don't have clausen envy like SoCal...they got their man.

his mechanics are incredible, regardless of his age.

JC can't go two years and declare he has to be here atleast 3 years if I remember correctly. Or are you counting a "redshirt" year?
