I was accepted into the U of Alabama the other day and I expect to hear from Ole Miss pretty soon. Unfortunately, I was deferred by Auburn, which sucks, and to be honest, I think it's just a euphemism for "rejected".
So, I'm still pretty interested in Alabama and Ole Miss and I know there's a handful of southerners on this site, so I'm asking whether anyone knows anything about either school, what they've heard, or whether anyone has ever been there and what their impressions were.. so, any insight would be great, thanks!
My wife's nephew is a soph at UA. He didn't want to go there but he's adjusted now. He wanted to go out of state but his dad would only pay for UA or AU (his mom and dad are AU grads, his sister UA grad in NYC med school now). He did not like AU at all (parent thing IMO). He's got a girl friend and could care less about the social like, he's not a football fan (rare in this state), more a computer/pilot geek.
At AU you can root for ND. At UA it would be life threatening. You'll hear 20 year old pissin' and moanin' about ND screwing them out of multiple National Championships 30 or 40 years ago. Put an ND sticker on your car only if you want to pay to get it repainted from the key marks. Both campuses are nice. Both are college towns which someone previously described some historic homes, some hell holes. I think T'Town has the highest murder rate in the state. Dreamland is reknowned for ribs but it's not the same since the IRS made them replace the cigar box cash box with a cash register to record sales (Ca$h Only, thank you!).
You'll get some crap from jerks about being a Yankee and possibly Catholic that's usually more latent. One plus for you. Irish is the largest ancestry in Alabama. I was amazed to learn that considering all the Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodist, Christ of Christ, etc, etc, etc. Turns out most Alabamians of Irish ancestry are Orangemen. The Irish Catholics immigrated to Boston and New York then to points West. The Orangemen immigrated to Charleston or Savannah and then to points West.
Not many Gaelic speakers. St Patrick's day is dreary down here. Mention the IRA and they think you mispronounced IRS.
Be prepared to talk huntin' an' fishin' an' keepin' the womenfolk barefoot an' pregnant.
Both campuses are conservative politically.
Do you have a major planned?
I always thought you'd be conservative talk radio host. The next Rush. UA does have a good communications program.
