They need a playoff thats for sure. Some teams get knocked out of the title picture early by a quick loss out the gates but play better then the rest by the end of year (See Calfornia and their early loss at TN). But, you also keep the bowl system in place as well.
I would like to see a system where the Big 4 rotate who hosts the championship game, 2 others host the Semis, the other hosts a quarterfinal with a couple of other sites (throw in some Dome sites to give other areas a chance Indianapolis, Atlanta, Houston, Minnesota, Detroit to name a few). That would be an 8 team playoff to determine who is the best of the best. Instead of taking the month of December off they play thru. If teams dont make the playoff then they can play in the other bowls. It will be like the NIT (Not Invited) they can go get their money and play at the so-and-so tire bowl or the dot.com bowl.
But atleast it will 8 teams with a chance instead of just 2.
This is the best idea so far I think. Keep the bowls, but also implement the 8 team playoff. I won't reiterate all the points Azirishfan stated already, but it is not only ridiculous that a quick loss by a superior team can preclude them from the NC, but even a team without a loss can be without a chance (remember Auburn a few years back?). That was ridiculous. Basically this system has built into it the possibility that no matter what a team does, it still cannot win it all.
Also, someone else pointed out the argument that would be made for the #9 team not making the playoff, and how that could be controversial. That may be true, but you can't completely get away from controversy. I would rather have it involve the #10. 9. 8, 7 teams rather than #1,2,3,4. Furthermore, by the fact that those arguments would be made, shows how the regular season would still be about as important as now. You still don't want to lose any games, and certainly not two, because then, a team puts itself at the mercy of voters again. At least with the 8 team playoff system, the teams that get screwed at least must be partially to blame (unless we saw 9 undefeated teams).
One argument against this system that I support, however, is how "non-BCS" teams with undefeated records would be dealt with.
