I am taking my son (9) to our first Major League Baseball game in a couple of weeks. We have a local minor league team, but no major league team for 100s of miles. Any tips? Can you watch BP? Any advice in getting autographs?

You can watch batting practice. Depending on where you sit, and if you can get down there from your seats you may be able to get some autographs during BP down along the fence on the foul lines. ..that would probably be your best bet for autographs unless you were ale to find out where the players exit the stadium after and you wanted to try and stay...some stadiums you can access the players that way. Other than that, just have fun?

In my honest opinion the Minor Leagues are more of a family environment. I have attended Minors games here in California with my 4 year old and it was a blast. Get there early, there are plenty of things to do at the ballpark. You shouldn't have a problem getting autographs either! ENJOY!

The family and I usually attend a few Detroit Tigers games a year. They have several kid friendly things set up around the inside of the park. You can walk right down to the wall next to the dugout during warm ups. There is always players that will give autographs as they leave the field back to the dugout.

I go to a bunch of Halo games out here. my suggestions would be as follow:
1. buy your peanuts and water at the supermarket and bring into the stadium. this will save you some coin.
2. Ok for the boy to wear a glove but not you.
3. if it's a day game, try and get seats in the shade.

yeah as a Tigers fan i can definitely say trying to get as close to the dugouts as possible is a good way to get autographs, gloves, balls etc. I would head down at the start of the 9th just to the right of the dugouts

Thanks! We are hoping to see Jeter before he retires. My son is a huge Yankees fan. I haven't been much if a fan since the strike.

- Call the stadium and find out when they open the stadium for BP. You can get there early and sit in the bleachers for BP to catch some HR balls. I did that all the time as a kid.

- Sometimes you can catch pitchers in the bullpen during their throwing sessions. If you're lucky you can snag an autograph or maybe the balls he used to warm up. Brett Tomko did this for me once when he was in STL.

-If you can get down by the dugouts sometimes players will start by the dugout and sign autographs. Usually they work their way toward the outfield but you never know how long they'll sign for. Tell your son to be assertive otherwise he'll never get anything signed. And bring a pen or 2 just in case. You never want to miss out because you didn't have a pen.

- Always use blue ball point pens on a baseball. NEVER BLACK AND NEVER A SHARPIE. The black will bleed over time and discolor into a sloppy, red signature. My dad and I started a serious memorabilia collection in 2002 and that's just collecting 101. Anything else and a sharpie is okay.

- Take pictures. It's pretty cool and they'll last.
