An avatar is the graphical image placed below the username (when present) in the left column. For example, under my name on the left side, there is generally a random Notre Dame football player.
There are some avatars available to all registered members courtesy of those that have signed up for the Varsity Club. These can be added to your posts by clicking on the "User CP" button on the navigation bar, selecting "Avatar" and then choosing an avatar and hitting submit.
For those that join the Varsity Club, you are allowed to upload a custom avatar for use on the boards. Custom avatars can be up to 125 pixels wide by 150 pixels tall and up to 50kb in size. For more about the Varsity Club, simply check the "Subscriptions" area in the "User CP" or send me a private message for more information.
