So, I've only been really into the recruiting process since this time last year. It seems now I am obsessed with following the recruits Charlie has offered. Because of my limited and short experience with this, I wanted to ask everyone a question.

Can you name some of the best "college" football players that Notre Dame almost or should have gotten?

I understand this may be controversial but I was very curious to know this. Only one or two players jump out in my mind and it's because I read about it at one point in time. Randy Moss - originally commited but got into trouble to my understanding. And was it Ron Dayne maybe??? not sure on that one

Reggie Bush. And Steve Smith.

http://old.irishsports.com/stories/subscription/2002/11/03/isr_football.20021103-isr-TRIB-SS3-Winning_deepens_recr.fff.sto

This article hurts to read, but it's there. From about this time, 2002.
Just like Reggie Bush can envision himself in the Irish backfield. Bush, Notre Dame's No. 1 target at the running back position, watches ND closely every Saturday. He has always liked the school anyway because of its academic reputation.

"Obviously this is a good thing for the (Notre Dame) program," Bush said. "I can't say that I'm surprised though, because I always knew Willingham was a good coach from watching him at Stanford.

"I can't lie. Them winning like this makes me more interested. But it won't be the deciding factor. (Winning) does help, though."

And then Ty goes and gets blown out by USC. ARGH.

I believe Jevone Kearse also wanted to committ to ND, but then had academic issues.

Didn't Palmer and Leinart both want to come to ND?

Casey Clausen- I believe Davie said he wasn't ND material.

Randy Moss submitted a Letter of Intent but was never accepted by ND Admissions. Yes, he did get into trouble over a fight but he was never accepted by ND Admissions.

Jevon Kearse was closed out when OL Coach Joe Moore told Lou Holtz there was a OL ND had to have. That left no slot available for Kearse.

...

Carson Palmer was told to improve this test score or his grades and chose not to. His senior year before the ND game he commented that ND was not willing to make an exception to allow him in. "I was good enough for others ..."

Most of you know him as an NBC announcer of ND football games but long before there was Jimmy Clausen, about 35 years B.C., there was a hot QB at Bishop Amat HS (Kory Minor, Joey Getherall) named Pat Haden.

Notre Dame was in hot pursuit while he was junior. Then before his senior year, his parents moved to San Francisco. In order finish his senior year at his old high school he moved in with a friend, a kid named J.K. McKay, whose father just happened to be John McKay, the head coach for the USC Trojans. When ND and other football powers came to recruit Haden, John McKay got great glee out of welcoming them to his home to recruit the top QB in the nation. Haden ended up at USC much to the chagrin of Ara Parseghian and ND fans.

Even though I think he is a good analyst, I've thought that its odd to have a USC alum doing the ND games. I'm sure others have thought this too. You just gotta wonder whats going through Haden's head when USC and ND face each other.

Reggie Bush (had a chance, Ty %^&*ed it up by not pressing the visit. he saw us play USC at USC instead. the rest is history. Its better off or we might still have Ty (Bush would have won us at least 2 more games a year).

Randy Moss - too big of a degenerate, couldn't even stay at FSU.

Haden won a NC, played in some memorable games against ND (and one particularly painful one the AD game), was a 1st round draft choice, is a Rhodes scholar and a lawyer. He's a bright guy, a qualified analyst and more knowledgeable about ND than most announcers. Unlike the Chris Collingworths, Dockerys, and Mark Mays of the world he doesn't grind his axe (if he has one) on the air.

While people talk about ND having their own network, NBC has been careful (deliberate) in providing non-ND announcers. Unlike ABC, you don't find the announcers shilling ND ala Keith Jackson shilling for the Big 10/Pac 1- teams and Rose Bowl supremacy. No homer calls or excuses.

BGIF, you're loaded with information. thanks for the input. Yeah, I'm sure there are many great players who considered Notre Dame, but many less who we may have had and lost to the competition. just interesting to know.

Couldn't agree more. I like Pat myself. I think he's emminently fair.
It's too bad ND doesn't play on ESPN this year.
The best broadcasting team in the business is Mike Patrick & Todd Rutledge.
Much better than, for instance, their cousins Dan Patrick & Todd Rundgren

Don't recall hearing about an arrest. Do recall that PSU wouldn't let Joe Namath in academically. JoePA called Bear Bryant. Bear could get a mule past Alabama Admissions. And Joe trekked south to Tuscaloosa on his way to Broadway.

Well, he's still in College, but I think he'll make a great pro...
