DELBARTON, W.Va. - Paul McCoy rushed for an apparent national high school-record 658 yards and scored 10 touchdowns Friday.

McCoy, who had 29 carries in Matewan’s 64-0 win over Burch, ran for 477 yards just on his touchdown runs, which covered 69, 1, 52, 56, 52, 20, 31, 84, 87 and 25 yards. He also had a 77-yard TD run called back by penalty.

The National Federation of State High School Associations lists the national record as 619 yards, set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, Calif., in 1995. McCoy’s yardage will have to be verified before it becomes official.

McCoy’s 10 touchdowns would tie him with two others for the second most nationally. The record is 12 set by Ken Pearson of Hugo, Colo., in 1930.

McCoy, who is averaging 364 yards per game, has 1,820 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns this season.

There is a little controversy over this record.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct? Link to Article

It's one thing to rack up 658 yards in the course of a game against a hapless opponent. Hey, it can happen.

It's quite another to come back from halftime with a 35-0 lead, leave your starting offense in, switch to a no-huddle specifically for the purpose of squeezing in more plays... and then stop returning punts so that your running back can run for even more yards. Switching to the no-huddle was poor sportsmanship, but the trick of not returning punts was a slap-in-the-face to every player on the opposing sideline. "You're so bad, we don't even HAVE to return punts against you! Hahahaha!"

It's frickin' HIGH SCHOOL! High school football is supposed to be fun. What the hell is fun about this? Does the coach play one-on-one basketball with disabled kids on the weekends too just for the joy of beating them 21-0?

Hope he is running to nd. :)

Doubt it... He's from close to where I work and he most likely will not even be offered a DI scholarship. Not even by Marshall (within 40 miles of his high school).

The kid ran for 500+ in the season opener as well. The team they played where he ran for 658 had something like 15 players. To his defense, his team only has 21 (VERY small schools in rural WV).

BUT, yes, it could have been different. McCoy's coach is an animal... not a nice guy at all... out for blood!

So it might be safe to say that if this coach and kid played up against teams like Brooke, Capital, Marshall, Parkersburg, Weir, Nitro etc. they'd be seeing much better competition?

My grandfather lives in Colliers. My mother was born in Follansbee, ala Lou Holtz.

I'm quite familiar with the Ohio Valley schools. My uncle played and coached at Brooke for many years. He was there during the glory years of the 1980s. My cousin played there before going to West Liberty. He was a big boy...DT. I had another cousin play for Big Red in Steubenville.

Since Weirton Steel took a dive, people have moved away and the enrollment isn't as good.
