I just received this via email from a source that works at Notre Dame:

Notre Dame defensive end Ronald Talley has decided to leave the Notre Dame football team. The decision was mutually agreed upon. Head Coach Charlie Weis will be unavailable for comment until Monday's press conference.

Well, good thing they have a lot of depth on the defensive line....(read an extremely sarcastic tone into that):sigh:

i hope it wasn't for disciplinary reasons. i dont really know why i hope it happened, there can't be any good reason for the kid himself. looks like we just got younger and thiner on D again.

Okay, I feel ashamed for what I'm about to say, but I'll say it, because surprisingly, it's been on my mind for a pretty long time:

Ronald Talley seems like a thug.......

There, I said it. I thought about bringing it up last season, but I didn't because he was on the team and hadn't done anything. Chances are, he still hasn't done anything, but I just never got a good vibe from his attitude/character......

You know, he could be a great guy and I could very well be completely wrong, but that's just the impression I had.

That's a little uncalled for. looks can be deceiving.

In any case, I wish Talley the best.

Well, my impression came from interviews.. those can be deceiving, too, but they tell you a little more about a person that just looks.

Well, I don't know why he is leaving...but I wish him all the success in the world.

He's just a kid and I hope wherever he goes he finds what he is looking for or needs.

I have to say, "thug" carries a whole lot of meaning and prejudices with it. I personally never saw anything about Talley that made him anymore a "thug" than someone like Zibby. You think anyone would ever call Zibby a "thug"?

I really don't think so. If he were black, there would be a better chance of it.

So when you "explain" him leaving the team by using the term "thug", it comes across as racist IMO. I'm obviously not labeling anything. But it's obvious to most people that "thug" is a slang term for a lot of people in more predominantly African-American urban systems.

So he "looked" like a thug? That pretty much cements the stereotype. He is a big black guy. And that "look" had something to do with explaining why it didn't work out with him and ND football?

As long as Frome stays healthy Talley won't be much of a loss. Talley probably saw the writting on the wall that he wasn't going to start at ND, and wants to transfer. Weis really chewed him out in that Pitt game last year when Talley had a late hit penalty.

What a surprise another TY guy transfers. Personally I doubt Weis cares, I think he'd much rather have the spot open for another scholarship player with more of an upside than a Talley, Hoskins,Incaranto, Parrish etc. The only player Weis seemed upset about losing was Vaughn IMO, seeing how he stuck his neck out for him after his first incident.

ohh here we go with the race card...can we please not waste a thread on such a good topic to race. just let it be, it was his opinion.

I may be wrong, but isn't Talley a senior this year? Does he still have eligibility left?

I wasn't the one who said "thug". And can you honestly say that "thug" doesn't carry any sort of African-American connotation with it?

I'm white, I typically don't bring up a race issue, unless I feel there is one. I didn't feel the Ty firing was a race issue, etc. But to me, that comment clearly was. You can agree or disagree, either is fine.

Saying "race-card" is a cliche phrase used as a mechanism to get the people to think that it is the same argument over and over. This isn't the same argument. This has to do with the use of the word "thug".

I'm not willing to go into racial issues, I'm just not interested - I don't care what color someone is.

Douchebags are douchebags, thugs are thugs..end of story.

Go ahead and call me racist, but look to your left as you read this post. Who is that in my avatar? Is it Brady Quinn? No. Is it Jeff Samardzija? No. Is it Tommy Z? No. Is it Weis? No.

I wish him the best. Thug can be used for other races other than African-American, but , it's traditionally been used to describe young, black males with a criminal element associated with their character.

And you think Talley is still upset about something that happened in the first game last season? I doubt it. And I think it's not a good thing for a coach to not care when a player leaves the program. This isn't the NFL, you don't just bring some more free agents in or trade people. It's a shame anytime a player transfers. These kids surely never think they're gonna transfer/quit when they come in. It's gotta be very disappointing for Talley.

and for the other question, Talley is a junior and he has a 5th year.

I agree with this. Those were pretty much my thoughts when I read it too. And so you have a picture of Shane Walton. Who cares? it's easy enough to like a guy when he does well.

I never said that was the reason he left. Just pointed it out, I still haven't seen Weis give it to another player like that, I've seen him confront players, but he went off on Talley after that mistake.

Yeah its a shame when a player transfers but Weis didn't recruit him, its better for the program to have that scholarship open up so we can bring in a higher caliber player than Talley. Plus you don't need guys on the team that aren't 100 percent committed to being on the team. I'm mean Weis did basically tell Hoskins to take a hike, in much kinder words of course.

No one forceed Talley to transfer, I wouldn't feel too bad for him, he was getting a great FREE education, and chose to leave. Best of luck to him. I won't lose any sleep over it, and I doubt Weis will either.

I am not accusing anyone of being racist...but I wanted to support this statement in general. You are correct about how the term gets usd in recent years.

I wonder if it's getting to a point where members of that class are just dropping because their classmates have dropped? I mean, it probably seems like they're not needed with all the talent above and below them, and a lot of the kids they came in with aren't there anymore. I know it's probably not the main reason, but it could be one.

and you could say, well, none of the players were recruited by weis, so why should they care about him. but that would be a pretty illogical statment.

Well, I do feel bad for him, so I guess that' s the difference between us.
