So are you saying that Nd should always be the highest ranked 1 loss team? Tennessee looks awefully impressive to me, and they lost their game by 1 point.

Did you see people ranking ND higher than UTX?

Tennessee did look good against a pretender who's offense has struggled badly against minor opponents and who's defense has put up superior numbers only because they played inferior competition. I deteailed their cupcake record last week. Michigan State could score 40 offensive pointgs on UGA without fumble recoveries or inteception TDs.

Well, if we want to be realistic, we'll realize that Auburn's not dropping below maybe...8? We're ranked 12 and I think that's where we should be ranked until we prove ourselves.. and today we didn't do that. Don't get me wrong, our offense looked pretty sharp, but our defense was tested by a 9th-rate offense. Yeah, Stanford has a good QB, but their O-line sucks, their HB sucks, and their receivers suck...and yet, they were still able to obliterate our defense on the first drive.

So the question is, did we prove something today?...did we prove that we deserve to rise? No, I don't think so. We'll get our chance in Los Angeles.

I don't agree with what ur saying. Auburn lost to an Arkansas team who barely beat Vandy, We lost to Michigan who destroyed Vandy. We will need to gradualy increase in the rankings before the showdon in the Coli, number 9 this week is an excellent way us get back in the National Title match come Nov.25. Even if we aren't the most deserving team for a top ten ranking, we are certinaly more deserving then Cal or Auburn.

If ND were to play Auburn next week on a neutral field, who would be favored to win?

That's right, Auburn.

So they should be ranked above ND, no?

While I think ND is the better team, it doesn't matter, you have to understand how the polls work. ND will be ranked in the top 10 this week, Auburn should drop about 10 spots to 12 or so, even if they are in fact a better team, its just how the system works. I don't agree with it, it cost ND a national championship in 93' when FSU won the national championship even though ND had the same record and beat FSU. ND could even move ahead of a one loss Michigan team the next upcoming weeks because we lost early, doesn't matter that we lost to Mich its just how the shitty system works. Think about it, lets say ND is ranked 8th this week and Mich is ranked 4th or 5th, but somehow suffers a bad loss to PSU, they would in turn fall 5 or 6 spots in the polls essentially falling behind ND. Obvisously ND doesn't deserve to be ranked ahead of a one loss Michigan team, but its possible because ND lost so early, and Michigan may lose later in the year.

Cal won't move ahead of us, they were ranked 4 spots behind us, its just too much of a jump to make. Tennesse may move ahead of us, even though they struggled to beat Air Force.

Look at the facts. UT beat UGGGH,(way overrated), CAL beat the Ducks that should have lost to an overrated Sooners team. Auburn can't throw it, LSU can't run it. All of these teams, add all of the Big 12, all of the SEC, most of the Big 10, most of the Pac 10, play sure wins in the early part of the season for 2 reasons.( RANKINGS and TUNEUPS). They all set their schedule in advance for those reasons. ND does not. We play a national schedule every year and some years it hurts us, when we lose or some of the teams we play are down. ND has tried for years to schedule quality programs to play for the most part. This year it seems we are not getting the respect for the early part of our season. Most of the teams listed above would have at least 1 loss playing our schedule. It is not always who you play, but the order you play them. GT, underrated, PSU, UM, and noboby wants to play msu early. The system will seldom be in our favor for these reasons. All the haters will not move us up over the next 4 or 5 weeks because of the teams will be playing. Why should every other team in the country get credit for early season cupcakes? After all of this, if we win out, and beat USC, we should be ok. I think we will move up to 9 this week.

I have a more simplistic view to all this. I love my Irish, but at this point. with this defense I don't think we deserve to be in the top 10. But 11 would suffice. I know, I know.....

I understand how the polls work: as you say, it's a bizarre beauty contest. That's why I like my way better.

Top 15, if I had a ballot:
O$U
Florida
Michigan
U$C
Texas
Tennessee
West Virginia
Cal
Arkansas
Louisville
Auburn
Notre Dame
Iowa
Georgia Tech
Clemson
Georgia

Does it matter?

With a bye week, they'll probably drop again the following week anyway.

Great to see Victors and Maison still coming out here a month after the massacre.
