Facemask Visors

If that's even what they're called.
I see Jimmy Claussen wears one as well as a lot of other prep kids.
I'm just thinking back......has any Notre Dame player ever worn one?
I can't think of any.
Ricky Watters?

Allen Rossum, Freddie Parish. Marcus Wilson for a little while, but his wasn't very dark. I recall either Kory Minor or maybe it was Bobbie Howard had one back in the day. I think a lot of guys have worn them, but most aren't dark and it seems like most were temporary.

They are supposed to mask your eyes so defenders can't see where you're looking and vice versa.

If an ND guy ever wore one, I don't recall.

I believe the NFL banned them? I think they have to be clear and not the tinted kind.

yea, the dark ones are for medical purposes only, the slightly tinted ones are ok though as far as I know.

I know some ND guys had dark ones, but I don't know if this was before or after they changed the rules or if they did have medical reasons.

Good memory. So there were some at least.
Thanks. I couldn't remember one.

Kory Minor, don't recall the others. I always thought they were due to a face (nose, teeth) or eye injury. Perhaps because they weren't permanent. I can't cite a specific injury to any of those guys justifying it though.

Yes there were ND players who wore then....they were named above.

I don't know how they play big time college football with them. I had to wear one for 2 games in high school and they are difficult to see out of.

When I played ball from 95-99, at some point the NCAA banned all players from wearing them, I know they loosened the rules to allow clear ones but i still don't THINK the mirror ones are allowed, ala derrick brooks back in the day..

The NCAA banned the ones that Miami players wore a couple of years ago. They were a bunch of different colors, kind of mirrored like. I know that Sean Taylor, and McGee wore these kinds. The NFL has to be clear or black, the Eagles safety wears a darkened out one.

Makes you wonder if Jimmy will want to wear one once he puts on the gold leaf helmet.
Can you imagine wearing one in a downpour like we saw in East Lansing?
You'd need freakin' windshield wipers on 'em !
I doubt Jimmy has experienced weather like he's going to see in the midwest.
It'll be interesting to see if he wants, or is allowed, to wear one.

All the players mentioned so far wore them in their Irish playing days, Allen Rossum wore his the longest. One of the rules that actually came down recently was that visors had to be clear, you can no longer have the dark ones or the mirror ones. Players either wear them because they think they "look cool" or because of a previous injury to either the eyes or nose.

I think it is smart that they don't let players wear them anymore. It could be damn distracting to a defender to get glare from a night game or something, off the mirrored visor.

I think there was also the issue of the defender not being able to see the player's eyes to see where he was looking.

I don't think anyone would want to wear it in the rain, but a slightly tinted one could certainly help in the sun. and with an eye injury, I think it would definitely help.

I'm almost positive Freddie Parish wore a dark visor just a few years ago... but he might have never actually worn it in a game. I don't remember.

That wouldn't have been a problem with many of our DBs of the past 10 years. Most of them rarely got to see the opponents eyes. They were either playing too far off them to be in focus or they were looking at the back of the opponents head, yelling "Somebody get him!"

You have to admit though, Ray Lewis (when he wore one at the U) and Brian Westbrook look pretty intimidating when they wear them.

I think Leo Ferrine (Spelling?) wears a clear one when its not raining. Ryan Grant wore one his senior year.

I think I read somewhere that the NCAA ban had nothing to do with competition or an edge gained via darkened/mirrored visors. It had to do with trainers and doctors not being able to see a player's eyes when an injury had occurred. Should the injury be a potential broken neck, seeing a player's eyes without having to remove the helmet is critical. I don't remember where I read that, but it stick with me as an actual common sense decision (for once!) from the NCAA.

I was going to mention about ? those in a downpour when I saw the thread mentioning it.

It's like once I was driving in the rain and my wipers died. Jeese did I have to pull over pronto. I wear gallses and when fishing in rain got to take them off.

yea, I forgot about Ferrine. I haven't noticed if he's worn it this year though. i guess it's rained in all the games he's played in so far. I think Preston Jackson wore one too for a little while. it seemed quite the in thing in 2004 with a bunch of those seniors.

and that above comment about neck injuries makes a lot of sense too even though I'd never heard that before.

there you go ...proves a point that you cannot see out of those things b/c i could have gotten open against him.

FYI - I would like to start a letter (prehaps a call for change) that hence forth NO DB will be able to wear number 15 ever again. just a thought.

Pat Terrell was a pretty good DB last time I checked.
Allen Rossum wasn't great strictly as a DB, but he wasn't bad. And I know most people hated Preston Jackson, but he was pretty decent his last year. Leo is fine. He'll be fine. He's just getting into the flow of things. I like DBs wearing 15.... and I'd like to see you get open against Ferrine. my money (if I were a better) would definitely be on #15.

I am a high school football official and only clear visors are allowed in HS football, I believe that College also has adopted that rule. The reason for it is if a player has a head injury they can see their eyes, which as a nurse I know is very important.

well, if no DBs can wear 15 anymore, we better make sure no DBs wear #23 ever again either. or I mean, when's the last time a good DB (meaning he played a lot and pretty much never got burnt) wore #23? or 31 or 29 or 35.

and Jefferson was better than his subs who didn't play at all, so I guess no DBs should wear whatever their numbers were ever again either.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, I just use sarcasm a lot as it is. so please don't get offended/mad/etc. You will find I often defend individual players, even those who aren't popular with a lot of fans and aren't necessarily playing well.
