As a direct result of unsportsmanlike conduct involving University of Illinois and Michigan State University student-athletes occurring in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 30 football game, each institution has been fined $10,000 and Illinois head coach Ron Zook and Michigan State head coach John L. Smith have been reprimanded by the Big Ten Conference for failing to ensure that their teams conducted themselves in an acceptable fashion.

"The Big Ten and its member institutions, coaches, student-athletes and fans place a high value on competing fairly and with dignity regardless of the competitive outcome," Commissioner James E. Delany said. "The conduct of the players last week in the postgame environment violated our rules and expectations for student-athletes and as a result we have taken the aforementioned actions."

The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.

Can someone tell me why MSU was not reprimanded last season? Or is this penalty only an unacceptable action when it involves two Big Ten teams? Or was is it because the two teams did a little pushing?

I guess my real question is what exactly are they being reprimanded for? the fight, the flag planting, or lack of respect for one another in general. If the latter is the reason than Sparty and JLS will need to be punished after every game. Not to mention his disrespect for Weis earlier this season...he has all but call Weis a liar when it comes to his claim of being hit on the sidelines.

However, it is good to see something has finally been done to punish that jackass.

Good point, I think it shows a bit of bias there. They had to do something, it was getting out of hand. Next thing they would be stomping on heads w/cleats.

After MSU planted a flag at Notre Dame and Minnesota planted a flag at Michigan, the Big Ten passed an "act" that this wouldnt be tolerated. Until this game, it hasnt happened since.

Good.

Time to start shutting these morons up and just playing football.

I like what the NFL is doing with celebrations. Some think it is just them being the "No Fun League."

No, the League is still quite fun. I like watching my TEAM play and win. What I don't like are morons that draw attention to themselves and have no humility.

Now here comes the argument, "Well, if you don't like their celebrating stop them from getting into the end zone."

Uh, I'll use the word again. Humility. Whether in victory or defeat, don't act like a jerk.

See that stupid kicker from UCF last night, running around with his helmet off? I thought O'Leary was going to kill that kid. A KICKER, of all people, gets a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty for doing his job.

What is the world coming to?

jigga: It's a different generation. I'm continuously shocked every time I go back to visit my alma mater and fraternity. Kids are just different these days.

No question.

I noticed the changes in college. By the time I graduated after my fifth year, I saw a lot of the younger guys doing a lot more taunting.

I think what the Big Ten has done is a step in the right direction. Pre game or post game flag planting and or logo stomping should not be tolerated. To me, go after the coaches and atheltic directors. They'll get their points across to the kids when the conferences start taking money from their pockets.

And good for Coach O'Leary last night. Even though that kid made the kick to win the game, the 15 yard penalty could have hurt had there been more time left. It was only 23-22. That kid should get an earful. He did his job, then cost his team 15 yards.
