points given up

The Irish are giving up 26.4 pts/game. Sure, they have played some potent offenses, but we can't win games by simply outscoring our opponents. I know they will progressively get better as the season moves forward, but at this point we will get blown out by USC, or even worse, beaten by Navy or UCLA. It seems as if 4 or 5 guys really come to play and bring it, the other few just don't show up with their heads straight. Is anyone else a little concerned about this? With some of these easier games coming up, I hope Charlie gets some of that young talent in there. I couldn't imagine a couple key D-starters getting injured.

What is everyone elses thoughts on this?

I think the secondary blows...mainly because the personnel is not up to the task or is too young.

Let's face it, we can be upset at Minter...but Bill Lewis is back there coaching the CBs. If he can't teach them how to play, no one can. Bill Lewis was KNOWN for being a damn fine secondary coach in the NFL.

We have much progress to make.

I think that points per game stat will be going down considerably in the next month, we have played some really good offenses in the first 5 months. I wouldn't say our secondary blows, we have played against some great WRs and when they are left out there one on one, thats hard enough, but add to the fact that our d-line hasn't consistently rushed the QB and applied preassure, that even makes it harder. Our LBs are undersized and can't get off a block, one of our safeties has to creep up to help with the run, our secondary is always on an island by themselves with no help. The points per game stat will go down, I am just hoping to hell that these high ranked defensive recruits that are considering ND come on board and we can get some fast, bigger players into the mix like the other high end elite teams like OSU, Texas and USC.

I was bummed after the game, thinking we never really put it away, not that I wasn't happy with a W. Our defense continues to give up big plays, it looked liked we forgot how to tackle, and our offense went into a shell after the first drive of the third quarter. I think the next few games will pad our stats defensively but going into the USC game, I will be truly scared.

Correctiion....it looks as if we have forgotten how to tackle. Our tackling as been piss poor the past two games. We are whiffing on too many plays and giving up extra yards. Are we tired? Do we need a bye week right now? We probably do, but that's still no excuse.

Ah, but how many points per game is the DEFENSE giving up? Don't forget, Brady Quinn has thrown two pick-6s and dropped a scoop-and-score as well. Not really fair to blame the defense for points that BQ has given up, is it?

Looking at just what the DEFENSE has given up, the numbers get a bit better... just over 22 points per game. That needs to get better, but it's hardly "Fire Rick Minter!" territory either. And a good chunk of that 22 ppg comes from the Michigan and Michigan State games where the defense had NO help from the offense for 7 straight quarters. When the offense keeps leaving the defense with a short field to defend, it makes the defense's job a LOT harder.

Thus far, I've seen significant improvement over last year. For now, that's enough for me, just as long as we don't stagnate where we are now.

UCLA can put up some points on ND.

SC could flat out bury them.

The last three weeks of defense have been bad, yet they won 2 of the three games.

I'm thrilled they're 4-1 when they could easily be 2-3.

Yep, both teams were on the road. Against common conference opponents. And SC didn't have their best receiver playing either.

If Purdue can throw for almost 400 yards against Notre Dame, what the hell is UCLA and SC going to do?

Sorry if my confidence is a bit low, but I just watched some kid named Selky Lemon catch 5 passes for about 300 yards against the defense that was supposed to be "better" this year.

That defense from Ga Tech and Penn State? Seen those guys?
